'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Added a little bling to the front of the motor. It's a lousy cell phone pic, but you get the idea. I'll get a better pic up next weekend.

time to take a BFH to the fire wall...

Oh and those march pulleys are bad ass ;)

Not running AC?

It's a factory AC truck, but the compressor has never been on the motor while I've owned it. Gonna keep it that way. No sense in AC when all I have is the soft top.

Why would I need to take the BFH to the firewall? Check a couple of pages back...I had some bodywork done to open up the dish on the firewall after my, well, engine fire. The BBC fits nicely with no BFH'ing required ;)

Just the March brackets for now. I didn't have the fundage for the pulleys too. Especially not with what I'm about to buy from Stomis.

Nah I meant the passengerside header clearance, with a motor like that its gonna be shifting around a bit. ;)

Ohhhhh that clearance problem. The passenger side header is gonna get cut up and the tubes rerouted for clearance.

Not much of an update, but some new hardware showed up today. It was my birthday present to me! In light of how much torque the motor is going to put out, I knew I needed to do something about the front axle. I came to the conclusion that since I don't have plans to ever run a tire larger than 35", that building up the 44 was the right path for me. After all it's got flat top knuckles, a Ruffstuff diff cover, and I'd already done a 3/4 ton conversion to it, and the hubs and brakes have been completely redone. So, with that said, I picked up a set of barely used Yukon chromo axles that already had Yukon Superjoints....it was a deal I couldn't pass up (thanks Stomis).

Unwrapped.

Not yet. Still a ton of small things to do before i get there. Should have some new pics this weekend.

UPDATE 2/28/10: Small steps... It seems like all I've been able to do is baby steps lately on the truck. Time has definately not been in a surplus lately. The annual bonus was good to me this year, so I added some more new parts, with plans for more to come as time permits.

Finished out the serpentine set from March. Serious bling.

Then plumbed in the new prop valve and ran new brake lines down to the front crossmember.

I figured while I was at it, I'd try out a different set of headers. These are Hedman 69130's. 2" primaries, with a 3" collector. They fit a whooooole lot better. The passenger side even clears the front driveshaft with the clocked up xfer case. I may try to coerce it for a bit more clearance, but I'm at least in a better starting point.

The headers are gonna hit the frame it looks like in the last pic. You gonna clearence it more? I mean under motor torque while running.

I'm liking the serpentine setup! My squeeky belts could use help there.

Thanks Brian. It's a spendy upgrade, but I'm happy with it. You can't really see it in the pic, but I put a new black powder coated 100 amp alternator on too.

There's a good 1/4" of clearance on the #2 tube. It looks tighter in the pic than it really is. With the poly motor mounts the engine shouldn't move around too much.

Headers look good! Do you buy them from a parts store? and you just return them if they don't work out for you? I wish I could play the fitting game with my big block. I'm pretty much stuck with the headers I have and am going to go to all ends making 'em fit. Congrats..... looks sweet!

I wish. The local hot rod shop that I have connections at said once I order a set, I own 'em. I ended up getting these thru Summit. I was ordering a bunch of other stuff and saved some $$. With that said, I now have two sets of headers. The Hookers (I will clarify now to say headers to make sure this doesn't take a turn for the worse) will go up for sale soon.

Once I get the fitment tweaked, the engine tuned and "broken in", the headers will get sent off for ceramic coating.

What did you do with that sweet looking winch bumper on the first pic? Noticed you had a stock bumper on it in the subsequent pics.

The first change I made to the truck was to put factory bumpers on. The others got sold.

UPDATE 4/17/10: Heep Extraction Point I've been traveling a bunch for work again lately. But, I've been accumulating a few things here and there. This update is nowhere near on the scale of Greg's work, but I put a hidden hitch on this weekend. Like everything else on this truck, it wasn't a straight bolt on...."adjustments" had to be made.

Early Classic Enterprises Hidden Hitch. Very nicely made.

Those that are running a shackle flip will see here where I ran into issues. The holes for the bottom of the shackle flip didn't line up with those for the hitch. New ones had to be drilled thru the shackle flip and the frame. But because the shackle flip is sandwiched between the frame and the hitch, I had to make a small spacer for the #1 hole. Ultimately, both the shackle flip and the hitch should be stronger since they're both tied together.

Installed. This is probably the closest pic most people have seen of the true fire on the tailgate.

With the bumper in place.

I took the gas tank out (it'll be going up for sale soon) to make the install easier. There's a few things to do on the firewall, then it'll be time to start measuring for the EFI fuel cell.

Nice. I've got the same hitch on mine, but I didn't have to make any mods. I think the ORD shackle flip doesn't go under the frame so it doesn't interfere. Did you get the flip-up license plate frame too?

So far, I've used mine to let a jeep pull me out of a mud pit... Twice. :o
