I am building a 72' K5. I am running the factory axles and it will have a 3" suspension lift. I was ordering a set of 17X9 wheels to run 35-12.5-17 tires. The guy at 4Wheel parts told me that that size won't work because they would rub the tierods. They had 4.5" backspacing. He said I would need 3-1/2" backspace. I measured and the tierod would will be tucked in behind the wheel. I have seen people on here running this size on 8 lug axles. What is the difference in the axles to let you run them on the 3/4 and 1 ton axles and not the 1/2 ton? Is the guy from 4wheel parts wrong? It would not be the first time.

I'm thinking he's wrong. I've got 16x10 rims on mine with a 4.5" backspacing. No rubbing. 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton shouldn't make any difference on this.
I've got a D44 with a 3/4 ton conversion. All it really involves is swapping everything from the spindles out on a 10 bolt or D44. 1 ton is a D60 and is a whole different animal.

I'm using H2 rims on mine, basically 17x9 with 315/70/17 Mickey Thompsons. The offset on these are close to 4.75 or 5 inches I can't recall and I run 3/4 ton running gear without any problems.
I'd say he's wrong - what would he know about a 1972 K5 anyway? If it were a 2002 Silverado or something, he may know but not a Gen I.

Normal as in 'typical' back spacing is 4" for the 1/2 ton axles, at 4"s of BS there's no issues at all.
My last set od alloy's were 10x15 w/4" BS and they worked great.
Pics shows a set of H2's on a D60, something like 6.5"s of BS if I measured right.

I also have H2's and the Dana 44 the tie rod is within an RCH but no contact I agree with NV K5 he is going by what his fitment guide is telling him... however you may get a little sheet metal rub depending on how much you flex your suspension
