'73 K5 Decade Long Build

A couple new parts came in today. The razorback lower shock mounts from DIY4X and Atlas support ring from TMR customs. I went with the bolt on shock mounts so I could move the mounts around to the best location without having to weld and reweld. They look super tough.

I'm pretty close to finished with my ASR now. I just need to paint it and bolt it up. I think it turned out pretty decent as long is my welds hold. Opinions? Once I get this finished I'll be redoing the tranny X-member.

My Blazer didn't come with a stock roll bar so it didn't have any way to bolt up the support off the main bar. I bought a piece of 1/4"x4" steel and cut it to 70" then put it directly under where the bar support mounts to the body and bolted them together. Here's some pics.

The obvious weak link now to the roll bar is the 1/8" plates that the bar is welded to. I plan on cutting these off and welding 1/4" flat plates to them for added strength. I think the current plates would just bend in a side impact.

good thinking.. mine is not a rollbar.. but a lightbar for looks.. i put my bolts through the bed and didnt even put a plate on the other side... im gonna be fixing that next year with most likely a flatbed.....

That looks good , nice for clearance. But do you nead a skid plate for the tc?

I'm trying to eat the elephant one bite at a time. That will be after the tranny x-member. I would like to do the tranny mount the same way I built this one. Just flip the mount 180 degrees and hang it from the top. I'm not sure if I have the space or not yet.

I think a 73/74 grille would look sweeeet in there over that 77-80 grille you have now. Everything else looks great!

I actually have a '74 GMC grille I just can't find the right brackets to make it fit. The 73/74s are a lot deeper. I tried to make it work then just gave up and threw that one in.

Yesterday, I finally finished the rear shock setup. I'm not sure who made the upper mount because I got it years ago. The lower mounts are DIY4X razorback mounts. It looks good and is 100% adjustable. The only downside is I'll probably have to modify my exhaust a little. I also started on my tranny cross member rebuild. I'm reusing the stock cross member and modifying it. Now I just have to figure out how to make oval holes for the bushings.

Today I finished up my tranny cross member and started on the skid plate. I had to cut a little off the cross member to clear the atlas. I welded on plates on the ends and sandwiched spacers and the frame rail. This probably isn't an ideal way to mount it but I think it will work. The skid is 1/4"x4" flat steel and will be bolted to 1"x3" in the back. I'm not sure if I'll add to it or just leave it how it is. I only lost 1" of clearance with the skid on there. 24" to the bottom of it.

I made a spreader where the rear tail gate goes since I'm going to leave the tail gate and top off. I think it's pretty much just like Steve's UAV. It should help keep the body in line when flexing.

I made some bumpstop extenders for the front. They move the bumpstop down four inches and allow for 2 inches of bumpstop compression before the shocks bottom out. I may need to give them lateral reinforcement of some kind. Here's the pics.
