Something inside my tilt steering column broke... not sure what yet but the rod that goes from the banjo shaped actuator to the ignition swot h is no longer actuated by the actuator. The key cylinder just moves freely. I need to move the truck to my driveway to work on it. Its down the block, around the corner.

So I hotwired it to get it to start.... all good.
Now, I can't move the shift lever out of park. Is there something inside the column that locks the shift lever in place if the ignition is not on? How do I bypass it?

It was a small victory to get it hotwired and started.... and then a crushing defeat to learn I cannot shift out of park....

The shift lever is interlocked with the ignition cylinder inside the column. Disconnect the shift rod under the hood or at the trans and have someone shift it to drive for you while you are on the brakes. Should be enough to move it to the driveway.

It is locked by the ignition, shift lever and the steering wheel are locked.

I could turn the ignition cylinder.. but it just spun freely. The front, banjo portion of my rack actuator had broken off... I was able tonget a pair of pliers on the actuator rod that goes to the ignition switch and move it out of the lock position. That freed up the shift lever.
