OK so with some researching, it seems that my 74 has a Dana 44 front and a 12 bolt rear , I am being told that if I am going to play hard in the dunes that I need to go get Dana 60 for the front and rear, are the oem axles just not strong enough? can they be braced? what I ma being told is when I get out and push hard in the sand that the axles will snap

What size tire are you gonna run?

Riverside CA? What are we talking here, Pismo Glamis Dumont rig? Or desert runner?

1 Ton stuff is heavy, very very heavy. If it's a sand only kinda truck, I'd beef up the front with a set of axle shafts and find a 14bsf/ D60 for the rear. Floatation is key right? :D

Keep what you have and beef up. Trusses and shafts and u - joints will be needed long term but I would do a little as go starting with trusses.

Some people say go straight to tons, but as said, they are heavy, expensive, and you lose ground clearance. If you're running big tires and on rocks, by all means. Sand is pretty forgiving, and you'll appreciate the weight savings by beefing up the half-ton front and going with a 3/4 ton rear.
