I took the broken starter off without taking a picture or marking which wire went where..... The positive from the battery I know but the two smaller posts and bolts I am unsure what goes which side! DOH

The smaller purple wire will go on the smaller post block side. If there are other small wires, probably fuse links and they will go on the big post with the batt cable. Some early models had an ignition wire to provide the coil with 12 volts during cranking, this will go on the smaller outside post.
What year is your truck ?

1974 I took a picture of the solenoid connections but can't/don't know how to add it. OK, so large thread at top for cable from battery and two other small (all three are red) . Then there is is a greyish one that was probably purple at some time, I think bringing hot from the ignition (also , I think where I connect my 'added' direct to the pos bat post to start/turn engine over from front of car. Then there is another .
So there are are two small thread , one block side (as you describe) and one 'out'. I should go take a pic of all wires.
I hate to trial and error.....

I am reading a total of 4 factory wires, and one wire you added for a remote start button ? The red ones will all go on the large main batt cable stud. The purple to the inside/block side. 74 was still a point ignition dist with lower primary voltage to ign coil. It could have had the positive coil by pass. Do you still have a points in the dist, or has it converted to HEI ?

Hi Wes, Thanks for helping on a sunday!! I cleaned up the wires and took a pic.
Yes I have the two reds with the bat cable and the one (now clean) is purple (though barely after 50 years of gunk all over it) and I'll put to the block side (what is that by the way) and the other is light brown/beige (yes up graded to HEI ), and I think where I had my remote start with , go to the outside.
That light brown is coming from the ignition switch ? (and why thats where I put the remote wire)
Correct? Thanks

if I remember correctly the ign coil by pass wire was brown, and it would go to the outside, small stud marked "I". The purple wire is the ign switch crank signal, and would be on the small inside stud which will have an "S" on the solenoid cover. Your add on remote start should be with the purple wire.
Since you have updated to HEI the brown wire may not go any where anymore. If you do put it on I terminal it will be hot when the solenoid is engaged, and the starter is cranking. It shouldn't be needed anymore.

Ok, more will be revealed......Thanks Wes
