74 K5 - Harry's Budget Blazer

Just cut off the excess, they'll work fine.

I would still need some kind of spacer because the threaded portion doesn't go down far enough.

Also seems that the general consensus on the internet is that you shouldn't re-use ubolts. :dunno:

I've done it. Didn't die. Kinda just have to evaluate the stuff you want to reuse. If its rusted and the threads are bunged, get new. Just my opinion, of course

If you are cutting down to new threads then they are as good as new.
Now if you need more than 1" spacer to get to the threads then maybe you are better off with new u bolts.
The threads by the way are rolled and when you put the nut on them they cut into the thread and lock in. Once you take them off now the threads are lose and could loosen up. But you can just check them every so often.

Contrary to the internet, in the real world, u-bolts get reused all the time.

I thought the real world was just a show on MTV.

Well thanks for the info everybody. I will have to double check to see how much of a spacer would be needed.

Well not a much of an update, but I have managed to get somethings done. Rear shocks in and the rear brake lines are hooked up. Made an order to WFO to get the TRE needed to finish my crossover setup. Also was able to solve my U-bolt problem by finding four new ones at the Portland Auto Swap Meet for 4 bucks.

Also picked up a pitman arm part#6601 which appears to be a 2 inch drop arm for 80-96 f*rd 4x4s. I also have a pitman arm off of a wagoneer. Not sure which one I will use yet.

Today was a good day.

Been finishing up little things like putting in the shocks, and relocating the brake lines. Well today I finally got the gas tank in and drove it around the loop. :woot:

Still got to put in my other u-bolts and crossover steering but it is getting closer.

Haha yeah. It felt weird after being such a hardcore lurker.

Unfortunately no updates as of late due to a stupid f*rd I have been trying to tear apart. I am hoping to get some time soon to install the crossover and hydroboost. After that I should be a couple of tags and some insurance away from driving it again.

Do you have hydro boost already? I can look to see if I still have one being kicked around.

Yeah I got one connected to a 2wd box and a pedal set up. Thanks for the offer though. I am hoping it will be a simple swap compared to putting it on the truck.

Well I decided to get tags and insurance to help motivate me to get this thing on the road.

I managed to get the bumpers back on and the new u-bolts cut and installed. At this point I think I need to top off the transmission and purchase 16 lug nuts and it should be ready to drive.

I have decided to hold off on the cross over and hydroboost for the time being simply because I want to start driving it.

No not yet. :(

I currently got two problems:

1. Tires are bald and have a nice collection of cracks in them. The ones I bought from you I ended up putting on the truck instead.

2. The exhaust leaks really bad and as a result it I can't drive it very long with out the inside and myself smelling like exhaust. Usually I just pull the top off, but since I put the insurance on it, we have had ****ty weather. I am sure I don't have to tell you what it is like, but it seems to be really nice for two days and then rain for 3-4.

Maybe you guys can chime in on how to solve problem number one. I have some money saved up to buy some new tires, but I am a real cheap ass at heart. I have done some research, but can't make up my mind on what to do. Feel free to chime in on which option you feel is the best or any other ideas which can be done for under 2000 dollars.

Option 1: Buy 4 35x12.50x17 bfg km2 ($1416) mounted and balanced and four new 17 inch steel wheels ($409)
Option 2: Buy 4 used 37x12.50x16.5 bfg military take offs (75% tread) for $822 shipped and use current rims. Still need mounting and balancing.
Option 3: Buy 4 recentered hummer rims with rock rings and inserts with bfg tires for $1900 shipped

I can also get 4 35x12.50x15 bfg km2 for $956 mounted and balanced and buy 4 15inch rims. The problem is I don't really want to grind the calipers and I don't want them to stick out to far from the fenders with a low back spacing. I think I want to stay with around a 35 inch tire because they work well with the current set up (4.10's, th350, 350 sec) and they would fit the truck if I decide to put them on their.

Also I have been combing craigslist with out any real luck for decent used tires. People seem to think their 35's with 30% tread are worth 750 bucks.

Also here are a couple of pics of the truck the tires may go on in the event the I really get bitten by the wheeling bug and decide to upgrade.

I should also mention the blazer will mainly see street time. I would like half decent off road performance and the ability to air down if I ever go wheeling.

$822 seems high for the hummer take offs. I have seen them in the $550 range shipped before.

I would do 17s if you could. Look at MTR's and Yokohama geolander M/T.

I have mastercraft M/T on the xj. I'm really impressed for a "cheaper" tire. Really quiet. Used up 1/32 of tread do far in 6k miles. They start at 16/32. I'm not sure what they have for 17" though.
