Ok so I know I had read a thread on here but now I can't find it for the life of me. Someone had a 74 manual that they would be willing to photo copy? I have been looking for one. I know it is kinda useless but I need something in writing how to put the truck in 4WD. Last time I did that was as a kid helping my dad, so needless to say I have forgotten.
So if anyone can help me out with a copy or something of an owners manual or instructions for the 4WD that would be great. (oh I have the locking hubs...not sure if that matters or not)
There are several permutations, depending on what transfer case and whether it's been converted to part-time (popular, but aftermarket, so you may or may not know.) And as mentioned, the visor is a good place to look -- many of the aftermarket kits came with a sticker to put up there for this very reason.
ANYWAY, the short answer is ...
If you have an auto transmission
You prolly have an NP203 transfer case and the shifter is marked "Lo LOC / Lo / N / Hi / Hi LOC" (I may have the order wrong.)
Normal street driving is 2WD high/unlocked, which is the second position from the back (pull the shifter all the way back, and go forward one big click.)
Street 4WD driving is 4WD high. You use either "Hi" (without part-time conversion) or "Hi-Loc" (with the conversion.) Actually, you could use Hi-Loc in either event, but you'd get more tire wear.
Low-speed, low-traction 4WD low gear would be for snow crawling or off-road, which is the shifter all the way forward.
If you have a manual transmission
You prolly have the NP205 t-case, and the shifter pattern should be on the floor =)) My shifter isn't stock so I'm no help on how they originally worked.
In either event, you lock the hubs for 4WD and unlock them for 2WD.
That answer the question?
