Hi. Have 'window' tailgate, however wondering about the rectangular holes in the tailgate posts. I understand earlier Pu gates had a tab with hole (and corresponding post holes) for the chain, but there is no chain on the later squares as they use a hinge and latch....yet they still have tabs(w no hole) on the pu gates.

I know blazers without tops came with a pickup tailgate. But why the tabs/post holes if they use a hinge and side latch?

Anyone with wisdom on the purpose of the 'tabs' on these truck tailgate? I dont see a need for them. Why needed for 'alignment' when the latch is used for that purpose.

I can see drilling a hole in the tabs with a corresponding hole in the side of the post for a tailgate lock of some kind, but other than that I dont know.

Thinking of closing them up while in the bodywork stage.

Pics for reference...left pic is 75 blazer post, top right is a square pu tailgate/tab and bottom right is a 73 pu/tailgate open.

The pics would help, and they didn't make it through, at least on my thread they didn't. Maybe could you try again with the pics?

Looks like I cant insert pics on this site.... but actually I already finished the pass side gate alignment and post. Made a piece with a dimple...to match the driv side. . Thanks

Are you modifying a pickup gate for a hardtop blazer? I'm stuck trying to find a tailgate at all. None aftermarket as far as I see.

You can look at my pictures where I replaced all of that stuff and documented the different latch setups. Doesn't your K5 window tailgate have tabs that go into those holes? The aftermarket replacement pieces don't even have them.

Thanks for posting a reply. Good info there. Unfortunately pictures dont work for me....cant even look at them as I am not a premium member. Regards.

You have to change out the tailgate posts to the truck style.

Then just buy the truck tailgate stuff

No, factory K5 posts are setup for the pickup gate hardware. You just need the trunions, hinges, and latches - it all bolts on. Remember that many years K5 had softtop as an option and those got pickup gates.

The aftermarket tailgate posts only work with truck gates, not K5 window gates (this is all documented in the thread I linked above).

From what I remember, only the 73-74 blazers came with pickup gates when the soft top was ordered as the only roof option.

The 76+ had the soft top as an optional accessory. But still came with the blazer tailgates.

I can't tell you the years a soft top was offered, just that all K5s support a truck gate from the factory, like I documented above.
