75 cadillac 500 problems - gen light

hey guys, not really a chevy problem but a GM problem none the less. since the oil pump went out on my daily driver and my suburban is stuck at home since i never have time to work on it... i pretty much need this car to work to get me to and from school/work

so when i swapped a 75 8.2 liter into my 69 everything was cherry except for the alternator would not charge the battery. fixed this with a voltage regulator and everything was fine. the gen light stayed on for a little while after it started but went off after a while.

i took the air conditioner off and the smog pump for a little power increase (its definately noticable!) and had to link the alternator pulley to the water pump pulley which pulls it a little slower. now the gen light stays on all the time whenever my engine is running at 1200 (sounds like) rpm or slower. at freeway speeds its fine but cruising around town idling everywhere seems to be a problem for it because when i crank it over it cranks over slowly. tonight was the first time i tried to turn it over and it wouldn't crank. i charged the battery for about half an hour and it cranked over just fine (not slow or anything) and drove it around the block trying to keep the engine above 1500 rpms most of the time so the light would stay off. after i brought it home i tryed to turn it over again and it wouldnt budge. what's weird is the headlights are bright, and all the interior lights aren't dim at all so i don't know what to think here because the car won't start. it won't even try to turn over. so now the battery is charging again because i need to take this car tomorrow!!! any advice?

p.s. i got the battery tested and it's good. when the starter starts correctly it cranks over as if it was brand new
 
Once the battery is fully charged and you're able to start it again throw a volt meter on the battery and watch what it reads when you crank the starter, it shouldn't drop more than about 1 volt while cranking. If it drops more than 1 volt it's time to have the starter tested and probably replaced.
