Buddy of mine saw this cruising craigslist and told me to spread the word.

This one is Chalet #0600, built in 8/76, and part of a larger bunch of 12 others formerly in Indianapolis which included my former Chalet #1747. Never got a full story from the broker who bought mine what that was all about, something on a wealthy fellow who was assembling a pile of carb-era 4x4s for post-apocalyptic mayem. Or something. But that notion evaporated, and one of our Chalet forum guys and his restoration shop partner bought the Chalet pile months ago (leaving the Land Cruiser/other SUV pile for somebody else), and they've been selling off some of 'em. Couple years back, an alert motorist emailed me ground level photos of 'em, and I put those together with a Google satellite image in the composite below, using my mega-spreadsheet's description notes to figure out which were which.

Yep, it is a heckuva hobby. Pretty much brought on by a guy way back in 2006 who was selling Chalet #0310 on ebay and claiming there were only 40 left on Earth, which made me wonder where he got that figure from. By that time our Yahoo Chalet owners' forum had around 60 members owning at least one, and I had been accumulating a pile of ebay and Craigslist printouts of others. Since I couldn't tally up the figure in my head without losing track of some, I had to create a spreadsheet of each one I could distinguish individually, and the list has grown. These days, our Yahoo forum has around 125 guys owning at least one Chalet or Casa Grande, and among those, some own two, and a few own several. Altogether I can distinguish around 380 of these vehicles or orphaned shells-only individually, but it is much tougher to figure out which are still 'on the road'. I end up adding around 35-40 'new' ones per year to my spreadsheet, when I find 'em for sale or when guys alert me to 'em.
