I just got a 76 Crew cab 3/4 ton truck 4x4. I was told this was a semi rare truck? Why?. Its got a big hubbed dana 44 in the front end. The dana 44 IS NOT swapped in, it came from factory with a dana 44. Anyway, this is a cool old truck, just wondering how many years this was an option. Mines a 76 Silverado, cruise, Air, but no power locks or windows.

I don't know how long after the D60 came out they offered this, but I know in 73 74 they offered it in both 3/4 ton SRW and 1 ton dually and the D44 had a spacer to make it a dually.
It is rare, not that rare though since it was the only option.

I saw a mid 70's K20 Crew at work the other day and was wondering the same thing. This one has K20 badges, but not the original axles. 14BSF and a 10B

GM made 3/4 ton crew cabs until 1989 I believe. As for the external hub Dana 44, those are not rare at all.

Who talked about external hubs?
I said spacers to make them wider for a dually look.
All the early 3/4 ton D44 were external hub, and the early 1/2 tons were too, they just kept the external on the 3/4 ton as a HD D44 even though they still had the small Ujoint on those axles but it was HD:whistle::doah:

so what yr was the last for a CC in our body style? i thought they made them until 91. is that not correct? or is it that a 3/4 ton wasnt available, only 1 ton CC were available in 90/91 maybe???

Can you get the Dana BOM numbers off the axle tube?

77 was the first year of the K30 with a D60 under the front. All Dana 44 before that.

Thanks fellas for the info. I do believe the Dana 60 became available in 77 now that someone mentioned it. Heres a pic of her so far, 4" lift, 33's and half painted Orange................

Crewcabs (more accurately, Crew/Bonus cab, the latter being four door but only one seat for cargo only in the rear) were available in this body style through 1991.

You are correct, however, that the R/V20 (i.e. 3/4 ton) was dropped by 1990. I don't have any truck paperwork for 1989, but they were still listed as of 1988.

It's a little silly; in any given year, a "3/4" sixpack had the same suspension and brakes as a low-GVWR "1-ton." Unlike the Blazer/Jimmy and Suburbans which basically had one GVWR for the body style, the pickups, particularly the 1-ton, actually came in a range of GVWR's, with varying brakes and spring packs.

Presumably due to their extra weight, the "3/4" sixpacks were down-rated slightly into the 3/4 class. The 1-ton sixpack had the biggest brakes and springs, same as a really high-GVWR 1-ton.

Obviously for the 4WD, the front axle changed, so K30 sixpacks weren't available until the advent of the D60 in '77.

See the Brochures link below for more info.

The original poster. He said nothing about it being a dually. I assumed he meant external hubs.

....and look, I was right. No dually to be seen. He was talking about external hubs . . . . .

No k30's were available until 1977. Four wheel drive was only available on half, and three quarter ton pickups.

So is there any difference in the D44's from early 70's till the 80's?. The hubs on this 44 seem much bigger than normal and they are Spicer units. BTW, truck has a np203 with a part time kit.

Yeah, those are external hubs. They are weaker than the later internal hub Dana 44's. Just the hubs though. The axle is the same. You should also have flat top knuckles, which you can use for cross over steering.

I did crossover on my Burban with a flat top knuckled 44 from a junkyard, crossover was a great mod. Well IF I decide to build a wheeler out of this I will be going D60 anyway, I just kind of hate to cut up an old Crew like this to bob it and make wheelbase shorter for wheeling.
