'76 k5 mid life crisis

I do the front spring bushes first, then the rear 2 next. Or vise versa, but either way it swings down the axle on one side and you can knock 2 out at once.

I take one spring out at a time. I use a press to remove the old bushings.

As for the transmission/transfer case, why do you want an NP205? I would look for an SM465/NP208 (or NP241 if you can find one). The NP205 is loud, heavy, poorly geared, and unnecessary for what you need. Plus the majority of SM5465/NP205 combos are ten spline with the female coupler which is a weak point.

Also try to find a hydraulic clutch setup when you do the swap. They're much better than the mechanical system.

the main reason i am tinking about a 205, is the 205 and 203 are the ones i know most about.

definately going to go with a hydro clutch if i go that way, after i broke my foot in 05 i cant even push in a mechanical clutch anymore. i am going to have to try one befor i make a final decision.

The NP208 will be just fine for you. Really the ONLY advantage an NP205 has us brute strength. Other than that, it really kind of sucks.

now you got me thinking, if i dont really need a 205, then do i really need a 465? is their a 5 speed that i could go with that would be strong enough? because at this point, then we can start talking a little bit about gas mileage.

i am going to do a manual trans/hydro clutch swap when i do the engine. so now i guess its just a matter of which combo to go with.

my local craigslist has a 465/205 combo with an extra 465 for $300 and if i look hard enough i could probably get everything i need for under $200

im about to start my front spring busings and realized i only have the spiring bushings.

can anyone tell me what size the stock uper shackel bushings is? mine are totaly wiped out and i want to get the right parts the first time(well second) as i have to order them.

thanks to everyone so far, my confidenance is high and i cant wait to tear into this front end!

How are the cast pieces the upper shackle bushings are pressed into? A lot of times they'll be hammered out if the bushings have been gone too long. I've replaced them with ORD's FUSH kit.

An NV4500 is a good choice, but considerably more expensive. I want to find an NV3500 for a cruiser. People claim they are week, but I still think they would work fine in a cruiser.

A 4500 is a 465 with an OD. But at considerably more money. You need to decide what you want to do with the truck first. Me personally, I find the 208 a worthless pos and throw them away in favor of the 205s. What they lack in low range they more than make up for in strength, and twin stick ability plus doubler options. The 208 is an aluminum cased (which isnt bad), weak chain pos that is a PITA to even do a fixed yolk on. IMO not worth the aluminum its cast in.

now that something i dont understand. i looked up on wikipedia the 3500 and 4500 to get a general idea. acording to them the 3500 was used in chevy s-10's, but at the same time used behind small block dodge in the rams. so going off that info i dont see why a 3500 wouldnt work.

They will work, they are just not as strong, and do not have a LOW gear.

The NP208 is plenty strong, and a dime a dozen.

They are also made out of aluminum, vs the iron of a 4500. But what was said above is true, they dont have the L gear like a 465/4500 and are not as strong. I have a friend that runs one in a 97 Silverado with a SAS and 37s and he does ok with it.

ok so what are the main down falls of the 205. from what i can see is noisey and heavy. noise isnt an issue for me my pete jackson gear drive timing set is going to dround out any noises coming from the t-case. but as of right now im running a second hand gear drive i got from craigslist just to see if i like it and can handle the noise. with all the bed liner on my floors everything is 1/2 as loud as it used to be. i can actually talk on the cel and drive down the road at the same time now.

just went out and checked my upper cast pices prety sure im going to go with new ones. i havnt taken anything appart yet, on my passenger side, the spring is less than 1/4" from the frame.

The NV4500 fifth gear housing is also aluminum.

They also came in the new body style 1/2 ton trucks.
They are good enough, just not bomb proof like the nv4500

what do you guys think of the ord bolt in steering kit? my frame is still good no cracks. if im ordering shackle blocks from them i would like to only make one order.

at this point im going to order my steering components from them right away too.

what a can of worms. anything else you guy can see im forgeting or can think of that im going to need. when i started this morning i was looking at $25 in parts, 4 hours later im almost to $400 for the same job. lol

They are noisy and obnoxious. You'll grow to hate that gear drive if you make the mistake of installing it. I have never talked to anyone who was happy with their decision to install one.

It's not just the noise of the transfer case, which is annoying, it's also the buzz of the stupid shifter. Speaking of the shifter, you grow to hate that too. They don't shift for ****. Even after you twin stick them.

The weight will piss you off every time you have to remove or install it, but hey it could be worse, it could be an NP203.

Then there is the performance aspect. It is too high geared.

Other than that, they're great!

now that you mention it my 80 burban i had in high school had a horable shifter noise

So Joe where are you at?
If you are within my route in the western states I can provide you with the complete setup: pedals, hydro parts and bell and combo of 465/205 or 465/208.
And if you prefer going the 5 speed route I can still get you the pedals and hydro stuff plus if you need it the case.
