'77 Fan Clutch

Hmm, well I'll look at the '73 Burb when I'm at my parents house for Turkey Day. I'm 99% sure it should have a clutch, but the original owner seemed to keep everything OEM. Hard to believe he would have eliminated the clutch unless he thought it would give better A/C performance here in Phoenix. Which, at idle it would...

Yeah, but didn't you say that it did not have factory A/C?

Yup, but if anything you would think that the direct drive fan would be more important with air. You can put either one on there but the direct drive will be noisier and take more power.

ive had a 74, 2 79's and an 84.
the 74 350 ac with fan clutch
1 79 350 no ac no fan clutch
1 79 350 ac no fan clutch (motor was a replacement po probably pulled it)
84 idunno, owner had the fan off when i bought it and it was a diesel vin with a rat in it.

id say its hit or miss depending on where the truck was built/ being sold.

Don't go by what *you* think is correct. GM knew what they were doing when they put these things in, solid saved them money, if they could get away with it on one specific drivetrain combination, they did. There may not be any rhyme or reason to it in our eyes, but there most certainly was as far as GM was concerned.

Not that it really matters, put whatever you want on there, but the clutch fan would theoretically be better for power.

Well, there is no rocket surgery involved to know that a viscous clutch could save a bit on hp and mpg. I will replace.

Thanks.
