78 blazer ls swap

Start of an ls swap on my 78 K5
Start of an ls swap on my 78 k5. Just pulled the engine and started to clean up the engine bay. Going to run the th350 for now and swap trans later on. Looking to install new harness on the truck but haven't decided on which one yet. Any tips and suggestions are appreciated.

Nice work taking the time to clean and paint the engine bay. It's no fun but pays off big once you are done. What size LS are you going for? Building it up at all or staying stock?

Yeah its a pain but worth it. Its a 5.3l out of a 03 Silverado, should have the block and heads back this week. Going to put new pistons and valve train with btr stage 1 cam. Not looking for crazy power, 380hp should be with in range with a tune. Already have the harness and computer done. Have a lot of parts for it already. Going to raptor line the exterior with a Cummins engine green and white 2 tone after I get the truck running.

Anybody running as ls engine with knock sensor delete? I was wondering if it was a worthwhile mod to do. Any input is appreciated.

I know they tend to fail, only reason I was thinking of doing the delete.

The early LS engines with the knock sensors in the valley plate had issues due to moisture getting past the rubber plug that was supposed to seal it off. The rust out and stop working. Not putting them in eliminates the the ECM's ability to retard timing due to pinging/pre-igntion.

Rather than deleting them, fix the problem. Replace rusty sensors and get a new knock sensor harness. The harness comes with the new rubber plugs. Once you have them installed add RTV around the perimeter of each rubber plug and a dollop right where the wire comes through in the center. They won't leak again.

Thanks everybody for the input. I had seen someone put rtv around the plug in a video. Seems like the best option. Anybody have good luck with O'Reilly sensors and harness? Or should I just source out the a/c delco replacements?

Installed the engine today. Mated it to the trans and torque converter. Was easier than expected. Put the intake to see how it was going to look installed:D. Will put new knock sensors and harness next and then install intake. Plan is to have the engine be able to crank by Saturday. Will start the truck wiring prob tomorrow or day after.

I don't see why the O'Reilly sensors wouldn't work. But I've never used them since I work at a dealer, I just use AC Delco.

The RTV suggestion is directly from a GM bulletin on the subject. Later Gen4 small blocks moved the knock sensors back to the bottom of the block since the AFM manifold had no provisions for the knock sensors there.

I wouldn’t use anything but AC Delco. I made the mistake once and had to re-do the job less than a year later because of a failure.

Went to junk yard this morning and scored HVAC housing. Mine was broken at the blower motor side. Cleaned it up and gave it a couple coats of paint. Going to start ordering the rest of the components I need soon.

Just ordered A/C Delco knock sensors and harness. Should be here in a week. Should Mount the intake after that and connect all the sensors. Found a stock fuse/relay box and decided it would make a good ecm mount. Started modifying it today and I'm liking how its coming together.
