78 Jimmy?

Hi
I have a 78 Jimmy I blew transfer case chain right outta the side of. I’m wondering if I did something wrong for that to happen, I was given the Jimmy and it had hubs to lock in on the front? Looking and reading about them I see they were 4 wheel all the time so not sure why the locking hubs….

The transfer case chain gave up because its 48 years old. The locking hubs were put on to help increase gas mileage and reduce wear on the drivetrain. Sometimes the transfer case had a part time kit installed too.
