'78 K30, the things I get myself into

1978 K30 plow truck I found on Facebook and couldn't resist bringing home
This truck is a prime example of why I need to stay off Facebook marketplace. Took my sister last night and went and fetched it, sadly couldn't get free until after dark so the whole trip was on faith that it wouldnt die on me in the dark with no parts stores open.

First stop was for some fuel, good thing too as I put 16 gallons in as well as a quart of ATF. Rest of the trip went rather well other than the horrendous death wobble once I hit gravel roads. Thatll need addressed ASAP.

That was the only photo taken last night, overall the truck drove fine on pavement other than having very hard brakes, basically no headlights, and the alternator not charging.

Took these pictures this morning

Underhood disaster to say the least

Initial plans are to as follows

  • Go through the Dana 60, new brakes and kingpins for starters
  • Lights, most do work but not well
  • Rebuild the bed with new crossmembers and a new deck.
  • Build a good receiver hitch for the rear and put a gooseneck ball in the bed as well
  • Repair my good 79 cab and swap it on with a new wiring harness
  • NV4500/NP241 to help with the 4.56 gears, right now it shifts into 3rd at 30mph
Today I got the alternator replaced and cobbled a fix for the dead exciter wire so I could move it around without having to jump it. To say the electrical system is hacked is an understatement

This is the first truck you dragged home I'm jelly of.

You managed to fix a wire and the pass side mirror.
That's more work then I've put into dumpy in 3 years.

That nv4500/241 is just going to ruin the character of the truck. Disappointing.

Thanks Brian, for $1000 id like to think I drove a 60 home and got the rest of the truck and plow for free.

I wouldnt say I fixed it right but its operable atleast. The wiring is a mess so I found the exciter wire in the cab that someone had cut and used this trailer light tied into key on power to act as a charge lamp. I didnt even want to post a picture but what the hec. It's a rusty pos cant have things too perfect

I do have to say I forgot how nice a good Q-jet is. This thing runs like a top, hec the choke even works

Got the trans cooler lines replaced today since I had one blowout yesterday. Snapped this pic before a party we had tonight, the rusty plow truck and my uncles K30. Ton dualies run in the family around here. (need to get my cousins in a shot at some point also)

Truck got rained in this morning, passenger regulator gave up the ghost. So the parts burb was raided for another door and the mirror installed from the old one.

Also have been doing some thinking and I'm likely going to use my good regular cab on here with the front end off my rusty '79 crew cab. The crew is setup for a 454/TH400 and all the wiring is intact so I'll gut the cab for its goodies as well including the doors

I envy you farm boys...

Room to park stuff is my great enemy.

Man, I totally forgot about your parts Burb and that crew cab. Let alone the other one you now have sitting up there. Man, you got a lot.

I like this build though.

I may be a bit of a hoarder! Itll be hard for me to part that brown crew out, but I'll likely never get around to using it otherwise and itll breath life into this truck

How rusty is that crew?

The crew cab is decent by midwest standards. The rockers need help but they're still there, bottoms of the doors and a little starting where the wheel arch trim on the fenders is. It passed smog on Cali back in 2001 and sometime after that got driven here. If I was smart I'd just stick the drivetrain under the crew cab with an 8' flatbed. Not like I really need a plow truck but it could possibly be handy

Sounds like you have a plan made then. :waytogo:

I'm still undecided for certain, I'll focus on getting the burb operable first then this thing second. I will start slowly acquiring parts for a 60 rebuild though since it's not the safest ro drive right now

Just send it to me and I'll combine it with my crew cab 2wd farm truck so I can have 4x4 flatbed plow truck big block man trans dually super truck!

Hey get out of here! First actual K30 truck ever owned, and first GMC I've had registered and insured as well
