My buddy picked up a 78 trailering special with stock 454 and th400 We are going to convert it to 4x but we need to know what gears are in it before he buys a front end. So is there a rule that says the 454 th400 trailer specials have a certain gear? or is it kinda more random than that?

More random, especially after this many years. You really need to pull the rear diff cover and count teeth.

Prolly came with 4.10's, but could have 4.56 or maybe 3.73.

I agree that it's probably as random as any other truck. I had a 77 trailering Special, and it had 3.08's, with a 350/350/203.

Ahhhh? 3.08's on a 350 and you're supposed to be able to tow? Gee, thanks GM! :haha:

You could call GM and order a Restoration Package for that vehicle. The only problem is the gears could have been changed at some time I would recommend that you physically check what gears are in it. I found my information in my glove box on the RPO sheet. My '74 K5 "Trailering Special" came with 4.11 gears (mine is a 4wd).

damn forgot i made this post too....Well we pulled the diff cover and it has 3.21's So thanks for the help but we got er handeled.
