Hello, CK5 members.

At the risk of making a total fool of myself, I am in need of serious advice.

[@sweetk30 Since we were discussing cabs in another thread. Thanks again for the advice you gave there]

The cab on my 1979' K5 is in rough shape. I'm trying to determine if I should bother trying to salvage it, and spend the time welding in new panels, or go a different route.

The area that concerns me most is the upper "corner" of the passenger side roof. Otherwise, the remaining things look like pretty typical rust-problems, with a ton of others here having tackled them before. My main concern for the entire effort is the roof, it is what worries me...

Now, there is Bondo in the cab here and there. A fair amount from the previous owner, and a bit from myself. Never intended as a permanent solution. In reality, I probably was visited by "You've been had LLC" as far as the body-parts go. The frame is in very good condition, I would say; Even the tail-pan is intact!

Main issues are rockers are still on but not in good shape, floor pans have separated from the rockers, holes in the corners, cab / floor supports on the driver side are just shot, and the roof is heinous.

That said... This is my first square-body, and I'm trying to learn as I go. I probably could have found one in much better condition, but, I was super excited about what I had found. Hindsight is always 20/20, and you don't really know how bad some things are until it's actually in your possession... Forgive me; Especially the ugly painting. I just wanted something over the rust-encapsulation I did attempt.

My embarrassment aside.

Imo, that is past economically sensible repair.

You're better off shipping a truck in and starting with better condition steel.

I've got to agree. With rust in the roof in multiple locations that body is not worth trying to repair. Run it as is until the doors won't open and look for another one meanwhile.

@obijuank5 @HBD

I understand completely.

I figured that would be the case. I will continue my search for a donor K5.

Fortunately, my frame and such are still in good shape... It's just the cab that's trash.

Thank you, gentlemen.

You can cut a roof off another rig.

You could make it a full convertible.

The worst thing about a Blazer is the crappy short wheel base. The best thing about a Blazer is the spacious cab and back seat.

The worst thing about a regular cab pickup is the cramped cab.

Why combine the two crappy parts?

Depending on my options, I may have to consider that; Chopping the top off another.

My wife doesn't care for the idea of putting a truck cab on, and making it a flat-bed.

I don't see a lot of older K5's near me, which means - like @obijuank5 said - I ought to ship in a donor.

My frame is good, I just need a new body.

I kind of like the idea of a full-convertible Blazer, however. Not sure it would be of much use to me during winter, though. The soft covers look nice.

In the meantime, it probably would be a good idea to repair the cab supports on the driver-side, while I find a donor.

There's a guy in Buffalo, NY - not too far from me - selling a damn near whole Arizona, 76' K5 Blazer body. He wants $5,000.00 for it.

You know there are full convertible hard tops, right? ‘73-‘75

Having just looked them up, I do recall that those were a thing.

For some reason I had blanked them out as only a [Gen 1], 60's Blazers thing.

Hm...

I agree with everybody about replacing the body. And Martin going full Vert if can find the parts?

You could also patch that cab if you didn’t care about it being perfect and are handy with metal bending and a wire feed welder.

Worst thing you could do is blow the whole rig apart without a plan on either fixing what you got or having a replacement. Then you just got a pile of parts sitting there.

My cab was in similar condition. I finally decided to stop buying more panels and got a '78 tub for my '77 K5. Found one than came from California with near zero structural rust. Spent 3k on it but similar tubs are available for less $$. Just going to cut old body off and swap this over. I'll need to modify two body mount brackets on the frame otherwise it's a clean swap.
