I'm looking at a trailer that's rated at 7,000 pounds. It can do what I need it to, haul my blazer once and my quads all the time, but I'd feel a lot better with a 10K trailer. Can I convert the 7K trailer with 10k springs/axles and tires or is everything about a 10Klb trailer beefier?

Thanks,
Matt

It depends. Some times a 7K trailer will have a 4" frame and a pair of 3500# axles. Some 10K have the 4" frame but some have the 6". And of course the bigger axles. Yes, you can put bigger axles under it and it will probably be fine.
Keep in mind that a trailer built to haul more, will weigh alot more also.

Yes,he means 6" main frame. I'd definately get one with 2 5K axles as apposed to the 2 3.5K axles. IMO it's way to easy to overload a trailer  :haha:.

it will cost you less money and time to just buy the right trailer. you might get lucky and find a trailer with a pair of 6k axles under it thats registered at 10k. I see a lot of them around my area. manufacturers build them that way because they know people are gonna overload them, and you don't need a CDL to pull it.

Mine is a 10k with 6" channel tongue that reaches under a 6" channel main frame rail, with a pair of 5200# braking axles. 2 5/16" ball is a must at these weights, but a lot of 7k trailers run a 2" ball and 4" frames. If you're just worried about overloading a little, then you could probably be just fine with upgraded axles. My trailer is about 2500# empty compared to most 7k trailers being about 1500#. That's a lot of extra weight if you're not using the extra load capacity. Also, I would recommend you price a new trailer even if shopping used, so that you can make sure you're actually getting a good deal. People tend to be very proud of their old POS trailer on rotten tires, that has probably never had the bearings repacked and with most of the wiring rubbed bare. Just food for thought.:D

mine is a 20 foot 10k trailer and here are the diffrences besides the frame...4 wheel brakes,6 lug,2 5/16 tongue...here is a pic for reference...
