My bother has one.
One con beside the fuel economy is the tendency to burn oil because of the low tension rings.
The steering is junk. Way under engineered.
The traction control is annoying off road. We re-flashed the computer to help solve the problem.
The transfer case developed a hole and leaked all the fluid and blew up.
Other than, it been an okay truck.
I have had mine since new. Absolutely love it for towing/hauling. Add 1 qt of oil at 3k and change at 5k with synthetic since new. No problems with the steering to this day. Although the steering column shaft clunks and this is a common issue with these trucks. The 8.1 is noisy at cold start up, actually sounds like a diesel till it warms up. I went back and forth with the dealer on this when it was new. They showed me TSBs and started another one for me and it sounded the same. So I guess this is normal. It hasn't changed in 75k miles. Just like any other truck, learn to deal with the little quirks and it's all good.
Nice truck but out of my price range. Its also a little newer than I want. I'm looking for either the '01 or '02. I want either a regular cab or an extended cab with short bed.
I really like the 03 I had for a couple years. Same as above- needed a quart every 3k. 8-10 mpg on ave- according to the computer. got 12 every now and then on the highway. I miss that truck. Don't miss the payments...
