Ok well here's another question I have a 4x4 88 CHEVY Suburban it has some 10 bolts front and back. Now I think the rear is an 8 1/2 right? would the front be considered the same?:dunno: Also I'm looking to change out the diff fluid but I would like to replace the existing cover's with some that have drain plug's along with fill plugs:rolleyes: so can anybody recommend any or point me in the right direction? :waytogo: thanks in advance

they are both 8.5" differentials, but the covers are not the same front and rear. the back cover will bolt to the front, but one top bolt will not fit.

Doesn't the front have the fill plug on it? I could have sworn they did. I haven't been into mine for a bit.

Never seen one offered with a drain plug, front or rear, sorry I can't help there.

Someone can correct me, but the 8.5" and 8.625" (8.625 being quite a bit later, like 90's or 2000's) probably share the same cover in the rear, and they are often referred to as "10 bolts", so that might open up your options when searching.

Beware that the 7.5" from S10's and cars are also sometimes referred to as 10 bolts, but the physical difference of the axle housing is obvious.

If you put the rear cover on the front, how would you fill the diff housing with oil? I think the front diff cover has a fill plug, but on the rear the fill hole is in the actual housing and the rear diff cover is smooth. That's how all the ones I've ever dealt with were.

well I guess my main thing is for it to have a drain plug.

That looks like a rear 10b cover with fill and drain plugs.

Just be careful with those aluminum covers when used on the front. Sometimes they are too thick and interfere with the tie rod.
