I have an old Eaton posi from a 70's GM car, it's for an 8.5 10 bolt. It also is for use with 2.56 gears, which I obviously don't want to run. Is there a ring gear spacer available so I can run this carrier with a useful gear ratio? And if there is, what are the cons of running a spacer?

Yes they make them. You can also see if they make thick cut gears to use the steeper series carrier with the next series up and make up the difference. As far as strength its negligible. The gears are still going to center on the carrier and honestly doubt you'll ever push it hard enough to have a shear problem.

I've been having trouble locating something, so I began to doubt if something to help me out existed. I'll look harder :D

I'm fairly positive there is NO spacer available for the 2.56 carrier, there is the the next carrier though. I would NEVER run a spacer as you risk the chance that it doesn't center the ring gear properly or even at all (seen it happen more than once).

Unless I'm mistaken, there's only 2 carriers for the 8.5 axle? One for the 2.56 and another that fits 2.73 and higher numerically. Why would a spacer ever be needed with the other carrier?

One should be able to have on made quite easily no?

Buddy did that on his 60 to run 7:17's.
