Which is better and why?

Other than the obvious 4 extra bolts, which I see as a great selling point cause more is better. Is there a strength/durability issue with the 8 bolt rims?

School me... please

The 8 bolt is rated for bias ply tires. The rim material little thinner and does not have a DOT stamp.

The 12 Bolt is designed for Radial tires and higher pressure. The rim material is thicker and it should have the DOT stamp.

I am going to run the 12 bolt since I have 5 new ones that just need to be recentered.

The 12 bolt rims come apart differently than the 8 bolts and yes the 8 bolts do have a dot stamp, I know I have recentered 8 bolts. I have never had a problem with mine and they seem to be more common so I say go with what you can get at a better price. I dont believe that the 12 bolts are any thicker and yes they are rated for higher pressure but unless you plan on putting them under a really really heavy truck I dont see the need. I'm running mine with a fully loaded down blazer on 38.5'' swampers.

I think when you get down to it, about the only thing better on the 12 bolts are the 4 extra bolts. I don't know anything about them being thicker than 8 bolts. I highly doubt it, at least not anything substantial. But, being a little more popular, they usually go for a bit more. I can get 8 bolts all day, with a tire for 30 bucks each. So, when I chose to go with H1's for cheap double beadlocks, I saved enough going with the 8 bolts, to add upgrades in with my recentering, and still come out way cheaper than any other beadlock.

I had read that the only reason they armed forces switch to 12 bolts, was the manual for chaging a tire read to remove the 8 lug nuts, and people would try and remove the rim bolts so they switch to 12 :dunno:

Having been in the USMC as a Motor T Mech and having watched 1st echelon drivers do maintenance... This would not suprise me at all.

NO FORKING WAY   :haha: :haha: !!

After several years running recovery in my field artillary unit, I can tell you that on several occassions I would have to come out and pick up hummers for just that reason. I'd say at least a half dozen times I had to pick up a vehicle because some idiot broke the wheel down trying to take it off the vehicle.

If there were 2 sets and they were the same price, id take the 12's over 8's. If the 12's were anymore, id take the 8's. Theres absolutley nothing wrong with em.

I bought my 8 bolts for 35 with almost brand new tires. Actually a couple still had the rubber tits on the tread, and all the tires were still soft and plyable. I could have paid 30 for some with a lot less tread. But on 12's with "fair" (maybe about 50%) tread, the price was 100.00 each. 60.00 each without any tire at all. So, usually, it's double or more for the 12's. More than enough to steer me towards the 8 bolts. Yeah, I would have gotten the 12's if the price was the same, but it's always much more.

i talked to dealer tire her ein phx,

asked the differerance.

he said the military switched from 8 to 12 bolts do to the 8 bolts leaking when the vehicle is heavily loaded, he also said due to the change over is why 8 bolts are available and the 12 bolts are harder to find since they are still in use.

this is what he said he heard

he also mention that they had changed tires to a higher load range, but now have alot of sidewall failures

here's a set of the 8 bolts i have.

The 8 bolts are for a bias ply tire. The 12 bolts have a radial tire. Maximum tire pressure is 35lbs and 50lbs respectively.

Why do the Hummer wheels have to be recentered? Are they a double bead lock "out of the box" or do they need to be modified?

see the rim in the pic the face of the rim is even with the out side of the tire, this means the is over 7" of back spaceing.

so they can be run on a dully set up no problem, but for every thing elce the centers must to cut out and a new one welded in, hence the expence

One more question... how much does recentering cost? /hijack off
