8 bolt vs 12 bolt Hummer wheels

I used the 12 bolts on my crew cab because I wanted a higher load rated tire. Its my tow rig and once I figured the weight of the vehicle and cargo, trailer etc... I would be better off with the 12 bolts. But if I was runnning them on a trail truck I wouldnt worry about it much either way. By the way I think the 12 bolts look cooler too.

12b's are just bling bling:D i think they look alot better, and more badass. i paid $40 each w/o runflats or tires. im in the proces of sanding them down and am going to paint them.

The 12s look better and are a lil harder to find. I have 10 8 bolt wheels. 5 are in use. The only bad thing about them that I don't like is that the outter rim seems a bit thin. If you run rocks you will want to weld on some rockrings for a couple reasons- 1 to protect the studs sticking out- 2 to give the outter ring some actual strength- 3 to protect the valve stem a little better. Yes they are double beadlock outta the box but that doesn't do you any good if you can easily peel away the rim from the beadlock and you still loose all your air. My 76 has 6" lift and still on the crappy 36s (want 40s) but I'm running a duallie 60 front and a van width rear with no rubbing. Now, once I get a taller tire that might change when it flexes. I would like to get some 2- 3" wheel spacers. Using a Dana 70 is actually a better way to set the truck up but I all ready have this 14 bolt the way I want it. shaved, disc brakes, 5.13s, 1410 and detroit.

Stock runflat. I cut them down to get rid of the run flat.

This is how far out a 38" TSL sticks out of a van width 14 bolt and a stock HV wheel. Thats why I'd like wheel spacers.

I asked USA6x6 about this once. THe 12bolt is also rated to carry more weight. Unless your rig is going to see some seriously heavy towing the 8's will be fine. 12's are just a little heavier rim, but not heavier in the places that would really make a difference in 4wheelin. An 8 bolt with a rock ring is the way to go...

not to hijack. mud stud, what did you use to cut off the runflat and leave the beadlock? just a band saw? i was under the impression that the runflat was magnesium or some similar metal and you had to be careful about sparks igniting it.

I am not sure what Mud Stud used, but I am using a bandsaw on mine. So far its a bit of a PITA. I am thinking about a belt sander to finish them with. I have a box of magnesium chunks and sawdust and so far no fire.

I used a sawsall with a long blade. It took for freakin ever and sucked. The ratio of magnisium to aluminum I've been told is something like 15% mag. It's very low. I tried setting the filings on fire and couldn't. If you sprinkled a couple down onto a candle a few chips would ignite but thats the best we could do. My bud, Boz42 on here used a plasma cutter. He chipped a chunk off and tried like crazy to get it to ingnite with it but it wouldn't. He's a firman so he had a fire extinguished rated H (I believe) to kill a mag fire just in case. I have seem pics of this dude who cut up a thick conveyor belt with a band saw and used that as the bead lock. Just drilled it on the ends and jhoined the 2 halves with a metal plate- ran some bolts thru it- had a couple holes in the plate for air to get to the rest of the tire. He drove all over the yard with no valve stem in and they never rolled off.

Another diff is that 8 MOST 8 bolts have the mag runflats and MOST the 12s have rubber. There are also two different kinds of rubber runflats as there are two different versions of the 12 bolt.
AND a 12 bolt poser shot.

Yea thats where I got my O rings. 1.10 each when you order 10. I didn't know that about the 12 bolts having a different valve stem. Will forward that link to a friend who just got a set. I used 2" long I think 418 stems on mine and they work great with the rings. I think drilling would be the best option- file that burr.

Note you need a class D extinguisher or dry dry dry snad to put out a MAG fire.

for all the touble in cutting down the run flat I am going to order PVC inserts and be done with it.

they are also WAY easyer to get into the tire compared to the runflats.

as for cost I bought 5 recentered 8 bolts from a member here for 600.

Well, last night I learn if you slap your burning t-shirt fast enough, you can put out a magnesium fire:doah:

While using the belt sander I got covered in very fine magnesium dust. When I turn the sander sideways it sparked and Poof! fire! I surpised my self with how fast I can move while on fire. I ended up with a hole the size of a quarter in the t-shirt and a greater respect for fire.

Yea I wore a mask while cutting these too cuz you don't want that crap in your lungs. Sorry, might shoulda mentioned that a lil sooner. Glad you made it out alive.

The funny part is I realy like how the runflats were coming out. So once I pick up more belts and a leather apron I will be back sanding.

I was wearing a mask and eye protection. I think I will rig the shop vac up for a little dust reduction.

i have 7 8 bolts sitting in the garage, all have DOT stamps.

recentering is just cuting out the exsisting center, tack in the new center, then weld it up once you are sure its centered correctly. make sure a good welder does it, it is after a tire.

Just wondering dosent moddifying the tire void the dot rating unless done buy a dot shop? as USAcrooksX6 has a dot number some how.

a good trip for welding in the new centers, is to bolt spacers in between the old center and the new one, this will keep them paralel then you can tack them in place, and weld them.

If you only THINK you are good enuff to weld them in then your not, take them to some one that is, and you will be happyer.

I tried to light the shavings from my stock insert in an open propane flame, and they didn't react any different than any other metal would. They just turned red and curled up. I didn't leave them there long enough to melt.. but that was the next step.

If there is any mag in there, it's such a small percentage that I wouldn't even bother to mention it.

Damn well I guess I can throw away the extra runflat I have. The guy I got the runflats from "tried" to cut one but was very unsuccessful. I only kept it because I thought I could try a small amount of backyard pyrotechnics. Oh well probably better that way as atleast I dont have to worry about burning down the city. :D
