8 Low

Pushed 8low over to the lift this morning. I finally sold enough junk to pay to rebuild the tranny. I am going to do some other stuff while I’m into it. Ordered a Walker QuietFlow SS muffler for it. I need to rework my passenger down tube, the driveshaft has put a pretty good bump in it. I’m going to put a receiver hitch on it also. 8low is now my general purpose 3/4ton & needs to pull trailers. As soon as the tranny is done & I can pull a trailer. I’ll go get material for sliders & a roll cage. After seeing all of the rollovers in Moab this year. I want a cage!

Because your shop is not insulated.

Martin
Yea, tell me about it. I went from a heavily insulated 20x20 that I could heat with a match to this behemoth. No chance of getting it warm in here!

She’s out! By the end of the day I’ll have it loaded on the trailer & ready to go to the tranny shop. I think I’m going to look into why my 203 pops out of gear sometimes while everything is accessible.

Well the th400 has a really bad torque converter. It got so hot it took out the planetary. The back of the case was melted slightly from a previous owner getting it super hot. I had to buy another tranny for some of the guts. Case will work. Should have tranny done by next weekend. Excited to have it “right”. I even got a proper dipstick tube & dipstick

Tranny is done but my back is out. Been tossing the idea of putting my 5.3 in the Suburban in stead of the Galaxie. I think a 5.3 turbo motor, intercooled with a Holley Terminator ECU would be pretty awesome.

Got the drivetrain back together, mostly. Fuel pump would not work when I went to fire it. Had a wire pinched between the motor & tranny‍♂️. Welded my front traction bar crossmember. I was going to make it a bolt in deal this time around but I just wanted to get it done so I welded it again. Had a heck of a time deciding where to put my fan cooled tranny cooler. I went to all of the trouble of mounting it in front of the radiator then took it back out & moved it. It’s going to mount on my soon to be roof top tent rack in the bed. Right now I have it mounted to my bed basket thingy. I had new joints for the front axles & was going to throw them in quick. Bent both of the ears on my stub with my vice. Trying to decide if this is a good time to upgrade to 35 spline outers. I already have 35 spline Warn hubs. Still need to run tranny fluid lines, wiring for the fan, wiring for the tranny temp gauge etc. it was nice having a warmish day & someone to watch kids while I got in some work.

You know that a 35 spline stub will not prevent ears stretch.
Only a cv style shaft will.
That's what happens when you turn the wheel in 4wd and give it gas, it will stretch the ears. Or break the ujoints whichever is weaker.

I think he's meaning that he fubarred them trying to change the u-joints so rather than replace with the same now would be a good time to upgrade to the stronger 35 spline ones since he needs new ones anyway.

Usually that's what happens on the ears when you off road, the 30 spline neck down stubs can also snap but the damage is usually the ears

I messed them up trying to press out the joint. They had a little step in them that did not allow for me to press with direct downward & equal force. I guess I should have ground out the step or shimmed the joint. They were super dry also.
