8 Lug Aluminum Wheel Problems

Usually the reason that happens is because the lug nuts are the incorrect length and actually bottom out before tightening the wheel correctly. Remove the wheel and then unscrew the broken piece(s). Take a non broken lug nut and stick it through the lug hole and make sure it doesn't protrude past the back side of the wheel. If it does you need to find the correct length lug nuts.

This is one of the reasons I dislike cast aluminum wheels as the thickness usually causes the studs not to protrude far enough into the lug nuts. Essentially the shoulder of the nut is the only thing engaging. Drag racers are usually required to run longer studs and open lug nuts to prove that they properly engage.

I hate the design of these types of wheels. I have the AR aluminum wheels that are completely solid, and lining those lugs up with the wheel is a total pain. But this is a very common thing for the nut to bottom out, I have one broken stud because of this same thing. One of these days I will get around to fixing it.

After looking at that pic again you need to change the lug studs so that they are long enough to enter into the actual nut portion of the lug nut by at least the diameter of the stud.
