Wanting to convert the front from 6-lug to 8-lug. There's nothing wrong with the current setup (10-bolt with D44 knuckles and 10-bolt spindles), so from what I understand, all I need are backing plates, hubs, rotors and wheel studs. Rotors aren't terribly expensive, so maybe it's better to just ship hubs?

You pretty much want the outer parts off of a K20 front end.....or just a complete K20 front differential

I wouldn't call it all of the outer parts. I should be able to reuse the spindles, bearings, locknuts, calipers and locking hubs. Certainly a complete axle would be a good donor, if I could find one within 100 miles, and maybe something will pop up.

Just thinking...break the ball joints & use the outer parts

A used front end would probably be cheaper than buying separate parts

It would make more sense to swap from the spindle out so I can keep the flat-top knuckles and crossover steering that's already in place.

What year is the D44? There are small bearing spindles from 70-76 (factory w/ flat tops) and large bearing from 77-91 (no pass flat topfrom factory). No difference in the spindle for 1/2 and 3/4 ton in the same year range. No difference between D44 and 10 bolt parts (knuckles out) from 77-91.

Everything in this axle is 10-bolt except for the knuckles.

If you end up shipping anything, look for big bearing D44/10 bolt 3/4 ton hubs and backing plates . That is the minimum you need. If it is local, buy everything from backing plates out so you have spare parts.

On the 3/4 ton axle, the only thing to look for is if the lockouts bolt on with the large external bolts (small bearing) vs lockouts that are retained internally with a snap ring like your current axle (big bearing).

Does this help you Luke?

4.10 Dana 44 front, complete hub to hub, has 6 bolt hubs currently but have 8 lug rotors & hubs included. $400.00

Thanks for the heads up :waytogo:

FYI, look for the newer hubs, I had an old set 15 years ago on my D44 and I had trouble keeping the kind with the external bolts tight, the bolts kept walking out even with red loctite and lock washers. So I would make sure whatever set you find they are the newer style with the snap ring and small cap screws.

That's what I'm hoping for so I can use all of my known good lockouts, bearings, hardware, etc. Plus, it needs to match the locking hub on my spare tire swing-out so it counts as a spare.

It looks like Raybestos is selling new hubs, but some of the reviewers claim they're not machined as well as OEM and they can't get the internal parts to fit right.

Bearing hubs is the proper terminology just so nobody is confused.

Rockauto calls them "splined drive hubs". On eBay they're listed as "wheel hubs". Anyway, I have a set on the way thanks to @fourxpete. Still looking for backing plates.

Bump to see if anybody has 3/4-ton backing plates.

Every now and then the backing/caliper plates show up on eBay...

Honestly, there are some there often, I'm just trying to avoid the $400/pair.
