In a 1980 one ton with a 400 transmision, what t-case should be in it? I thought it was going to be a 205, but it has a slip yoke. I know that there was some slip yoke 205's, but what year did they come in? I know that I could check closer to see what it really is, but the truck is not in the garage yet.

Keep it simple

All 1980 models came with the 205...and all had slip-yokes.

ALL '80 trucks have the NP205's with the slip yoke.

Slip-yoke 205's started in '80. Crewcabs and stripped-chassis models stayed as a bolt-on yoke right up to (and including) '91.

Please forgive my ignorance but, what is a "stripped-chassis model"?

Never put a stupid move passed a stupid person.

That is the 'cab and chassis', which has no bed. It allows for provisions for the customer to add anything he wants behind the cab. Such provisions are stuff like flat beds, utility boxes, etc.

In order to swap from a slip yoke to a fixed yoke, all you need is a donar fixed yoke 205. Just take apart the back end of a fixed yoke, (gear, stub shaft, bearings, housing ect....) and replace it in the slip yoke. IT ALL FITS! Got to love the earlier GM / New Process engineers - kit it simple!!! I did this on my 80' 205 to install some High Angle Driveline 1350 CV shafts.

I have a '86 1-ton crewcab full length bed. I would like to put a doubler in it eventually and plan on 38" tires. What would the recommended length in this case be?
