So I was getting some grinding noises coming from the front while the 4 wheel was engaged, turned out to be the front driveshaft hitting the trans crossmember. I thought it was just bad rubber mounts but upon further inspection, one of the legs on the trans adapter has broken clean off where it mounts to the rubber on the crossmember. I have found that I can probably get a used one online but how hard are they to install? do you have to drop the transfer case? can you support the transfer case and trans and bolt it in?

I would tell you that the easiest way to install a new adapter would be to drop your tranny/t case as one (leave them bolted together and drop them by the crossmember). Then once you have the unit on the floor you can split them apart and bolt your new adapter onto the crossmember. I'm not sure how a 205 case compares to a 203 in weight but I know that the way the 203 is (heavy and awkward) the only sensible way and the easiest way to remove it is to drop the Tranny/ t case together by putting a jack under the crossmember and bringing them down that way. This is how I've always done it, not very hard, only takes an hour or so. Then bolt the Tranny and t case back together and reinstall. Now: if your 205 case is light enough (I've never owned a 205 so i don't know) I would think you could remove the t case from the adapter and drop it, then support the tranny with a jack and unbolt the crossmember, bring it down and then install your new adapter, then bolt the Tranny back up and crossmember back in place and then stick the t case back on.

it easier to drop the t-case out.

Advanced Adapters sells new adapters if your looking for a source.

Make sure you order new seals.

Here's a couple pics from when I swapped a np205 into my truck

FYI: a 205 weighs in the neighborhood of 135 lbs. without the adaptor.

Hey thanks for the advice, looks like I can unbolt the t-case and the crossmember together without the trans attached, I looked on the round metal tag and says is a 208

Honesty unless your the type that lifts weights it's all the same trying to man handle a t case into a lifted truck. Whether it's a 90 pounds 208/241 or a 130 lb 205 they're a bitch to get back in when the truck is lifted.

I agree, even the cheap HF jack I posted above makes it easy.

Might want to make sure you have a th350 before you buy an adapter.

skunked, did you get that trans jack at harbor freight? I saw those on their website probably will pick one up did it come with that strap? The jack is $30 a day to rent so it would be worth it to just pick one up. I found a GM truck wrecking yard in the LA area that will most likely have the adapter I have to call back tomorrow. Thats all the progress for now.

My buddy and I used one of those HF jacks to reinstall the tranny and tcase in his early bronco. It worked pretty well.

A 3/4" drive controls the height so with a cordless impact you can lift/drop anything pretty quick. I've pulled two transmissions and a few T-cases so it's been well worth the money.

Another vote for HF jack. I just pulled my 700r4 with it. Its a must have. If you search google for a 20% dicount at hf youll find one.
