82 stepside. Thoughts and crazy ideas

Oh the truck will be way happier without it lol.

Yep. Main reason for considering bringing it is my girlfriend. She's not used to tent camping. And it has to do with security. But she did grow up in Philly, so she's used to locking everything up tight.

She's used to four solid walls when sleeping.
I can totally see how she might feel nervous in a tent. May want to stick to a koa cabin in the more populated areas along the way.

Yep, we're thinking of those and of course regular hotels if need be.

It's kinda funny. She was in the girl scouts but when they went camping they stayed in cabins. Never tents.

Tents don't bother me any.

So a little while back I ordered this up from Shane at four by design. Pretty sure he is on here. Either way. I finally got started on it today.20221008_094426.jpg20221008_122342.jpg20221008_135711.jpg

Obviously still a ways to go and I will be adding a swing out tire carrier. The tire in the bed works but I'd rather have the space for other things.

I'll have my guys at work paint it up for me once I'm done.

And moving right along.
I got the bumper tacked up and test fitted. Fit is pretty spot on. Not bad for his first stepside.
The little tab is to hold the tabs in place that make up the shackle mount. I forgot to get a close up of that tacked.
Burned it all in with the old Deltaweld 450 with .045 dual shield. Massive overkill. Means it's just right.

Now I still have to smooth it all out and paint it. But this portion is looking good.

I'm still working on a swing style for the tire carrier. I'm gonna try and keep the stock style taillights, in the stock position. But we'll see what happens. I have a plan B if that doesn't work out.

Was a productive day.

So a couple ideas I have and probably needing to do rear brakes have brought this idea to the forefront.

I'd really like to swap out the rear for one that already has disc brakes and has a vss in it.
The most obvious choice is from the early 2000s power wagons. Disc brakes, 4.56s, limited slip/e-locker. Should be a bolt in affair pretty much.

Now finding one is the challenge. I did find one on this site.

Seems like a decent price. Free shipping supposedly too.

Thing is, I've never heard of them. Reviews are so so.

Anyone have experience with them?

Have another line/source for the axle I'm looking for?

That limited slip/elocker isn’t the greatest, and when they break they are $$$$. I’d take a 14 bolt over an AAM anyday

I agree on the site seeming questionable at best. Hence why I am asking.

Does that locker break under heavy use or normal?
The gov-lock in my current 14 bolt is perfect for how I use my truck. So I was hoping that would be similar just with the added bonus of push button lock-up.

Plus the rear is already set with disc.

I'm pretty sure I can add the full disc setup from a newer aam on my rear.
The vss is what I want. It would be very helpful for some other mods I have in mind.

What year did ford start running the electric rear locker in the super duties? I'm thinking maybe '17 with that new body style. I'm not sure on the wms measurement and you'd need adapters for the metric bolt pattern but I wonder how those rear ends are. I know they are optioned in way more trucks so they should be easier to find.
Edit...I've had good luck with the limited slip regular super duty rear ends also. Would it be a bad idea to swap one of those in from a '99+ super duty? Not sure how durable they are off road.

Outside of needing different wheels, I'm not a fan of adapters, it's not a bad idea.

Iike I said, I want the vss. Everything else is a bonus.

In my experience with them the limited slip fails and then pieces of it end up jamming it up and the only way Mopar sells it is the whole unit. This was when I was working at a dodge dealer so there may be more aftermarket support now.

Got it.
And I would be going after the "early" version to get the 4.56 gears. So scratch that idea.

Well that’s just been my experience, your mileage my vary. The jeep rubicon axles grenade more often than not as well

I'm still on the fence about a rear axle. I think I found a way to have a vss signal. So getting a rear with it. Isn't super critical. So I may just swap a new style disc setup onto my axle. Have to see what I'm able to find. If I don't, not tragic. The drums work. So this is more of a kinda want, not real need.

That said I do have to replace the brake booster sooner then later. Easy enough to get from napa and just swap it out. But in true might as well fashion, I'm thinking of changing out the brake MC too. If I can find the style that uses the plastic reservoir. The metal currently on the truck is always wet. Even with a new seal.

So the question is which one do I need to get? There's kinda no ryhm or reason to what gm installed on what. I thinking a newer year should work just fine. From say a 96 diesel suburban. Should be a bolt in and go kinda setup. I hope.

What do you need the VSS for?

Autometer makes a speedo sender that screws into the speedo cable output in the trans. One is just a VSS for an electric speedometer. They also have one that is a "through type" the means you can also screw the speedometer cable into the other side of it.

Would one of these serve your purpose or you need a factory VSS for some reason?

The newer 14 bolts should have one. Would just have to regear one if I found it.

Aftermarket cruise control. The stock 82 stuff never work all the years I've had the truck.

But more importantly, a future 6L80 swap.

I've been debating a manual or better auto swap for a while. Between the trip next year and other trips where my girl will need to drive. She can't drive a manual, yet.
But some knee pains reminding me I'm not getting younger.
So 6L80 it is.

I have an ‘03 aam 14 bolt and no vss. I don’t believe gm uses vss on axle. Always trans or t-case
