asking for a friend, he can get either. working trans, transfer case, adapter, shifter for the 205 and th400, cross member and drive shafts.

either set up 500 bucks. think thats a descent price. would one be better to go with tho? thanks

the 87 might be the round pattern instead of the race track adapter pattern. I'm not 100% certain and someone here will prob know for sure. If so I would get the round pattern one.

easier to upgrade with later. You can put a ford 205 behind it if you go hi-pinion ford 60. You can get a lowmax 205 housing with a direct swap.

I'd go with the older figure-8 pattern 205 since he would be able to mate the Doubler stuff up to it easier than the round pattern input shaft.

You can get the doubler for either t case.
Yeah, I'm aware of that. Just simpler and easier to just bolt the pieces together than to redrill for holes, etc.

I read somewhere that if the turbo 400 had "webbing" near the bellhousing it was built extra heavy duty. How about the condition of the transmission (mileage, rebuilt?). If they look identical go with the one with the less mileage.Pull the speedo gear on transfer cases the one with the less tooth count went to a truck with a larger axle ratio (4.11 vs 3.08). Therefore the transmission did less work and would probably last longer. In either case replace the front seal and buy a new torque converter with the correct stall speed for your use. Usually the stall speed is stamped onthe converter. Higher stall ( to 2400rpm ) good engine response on paved roads, lower stall ( 1200rpm) less overheating potential off road.

Some things to consider:
- a rear fixed yoke would be a big plus
- there are 205 with some kind of a front synchro in it (made for D60 auto hub equipped trucks). If a 32 spline front swap is in the future, almost everything from the donor (ford) 205 has to be used.

- two 400/205 combos are always better than one :D

A big thankyou to former posters here and on pirate for excellent tech info on 205!!

Walter

Edit: a diesel converter could have problems behind a gasoline engine & vice versa

yes, its fix yoke. it had manul hubs. he made out well. 800 bucks both set up droped at his house.

to think of it, can you clock up a round patten 205?

Yes you can use the 208/241 clocking ring ot rotate the case but it will need to be clearanced for the shift rail. I just saw a post with pictures yesterday either hear or on Pirate with pictures of how to do it.

I think what you're tlaking about is in the Chevy forum. You wont be able to use the stock shifter after clocking it. You'd have to buy high dollar NWF cable shifters or is there somethintg else to use?

Nope here is what I am talking about. Post #40 has pics and it looks like a stock adapte with shifter mount to me. Looks like the mods can be made with a cutoff wheel, flat disk and angle grinder.

actually that IS in the chevy forum and IS what I was refering to and if you'd look a little closer and think for a moment, you move the pivot point of the shifter in reference to the shift rails so NO the stock shifter setup wouldnt work without modification.

So modify the ****ing shifter you dumb ****:angry1:. If you can modify an clocking ring and Tcase adapter I am sure 2 linkages are not going to be the deal breaker.

You stated "You'd have to buy high dollar NWF cable shifters" and my post was to say it is possible to use the stock stuff not dump a few hundred on cable shifters:rolleyes:
