asking for a friend. both motors are from the same guy. 83 has 60k form a cucv. 90 has a 148 from a k5. either one will be getting torn down and rebuilt. then a turbo.

witch would be better to start with? thanks

im confused, if youre tearing it down and rebuilding, whats the difference?

I mean, it really depends on if they are broken in some way or not. even with 148k on it, it should be barely broken in. cylinder walls should be good, bearings and everything will probably be solid.

I may throw a fluidamper on it, but other than that, Id probably run em without even a rebuild.

Difference is that some blocks are reputed to be stronger and more reliable than others. Better to throw money into a rebuild if it's a stronger block, right?

Check if the '90 block is a 599 casting. Beefier block because it was used for 6.5's as well, one piece rear main seal so you can use a 6.5 crank in it if you need to replace the crank, thicker piston walls because it was sized for the 6.5 bore, and has the oil boss in the front that would let you use the stock 6.5 turbo oil feed.

If it's not a 599, no real difference.

was completely unaware of that information. added to the banks of knowledge. thanks for catching my negligence yet again wrench

There are a lot of GM diesels in my area, they show up pretty regularly in the wrecking yards and I clean them out where I can ;) Still not real familiar with the Banks setups though . . .
