83' M1009 Rebuild to Civilian

I know what you mean. Pipe wrench on the yoke braced off the floor and a 3/4" drive long handle ratchet on the nut. Used my foot to push on the ratchet. Marked the nut and pinion shaft with punch so it went back where it was. 20 yrs ago or so I could have just pulled on the wrench with my hands, those days are gone.:frown1:

For future reference, I have air tools at home and would've gladly helped with that pinion seal. :waytogo:

26mpg? I think you're speedometer is off...

But seriously awesome job on the truck :waytogo:

Where did you get your door panels?

Actually, this truck stinks :poo: and I'm not kidding, The blazer had apparently just been driven through a bunch of Quahogs.

Seriously though...

I can't believe how quick this truck went together. I saw it last fall in bare metal and totally gutted. Not only is it already all back together, but it rides and looks like a new truck.

This truck is as straight and clean in person as it looks in the pics.

I look forward to seeing pics with the brush guard all mounted up.

Also, thanks again for the alternator. It's charging a little low, but it just got me through about 300 miles of back country Maine roads. :thumb: I'll be getting a couple rebuilt to have ready now.

LOL, I forgot about that damn smell. It needed a good scrubbing to get the smelly mud off the tires and inner wells. Thanks for the compliments. It was a lot of long marathon nights getting it back together but well worth it. I really enjoy driving it.

Glad the alternator worked. Didn't know it was putting out low, never had a problem with it. Are you going to be able to use the parts one? Going to pick up the brush guard tomorrow or next day and soft top is on it's way. Also got to replace the brand new radio I put in. Must have a problem with the output circuit as it will just stop making sound either on radio or cd yet the when the sound comes back the song is in time where it should be like it never stopped. It shows the cd playing but no sound. Sometimes it only does it a few times during a ride. Other times it does it the whole ride. Spoke with the company and they told me to send it back for replacement. It has pre-programmed weather stations and I like that feature. I can also use one of those stations for a traffic one.

Should have some good pictures up when the guard gets on, both the the hardtop and soft top. Ended up getting the charcoal colored top.

Speedo is over just 1/2 to 1mph over at 40 and right on at 65 tested with GPS and local police radar trailers along the roads. The speedo guy I got my driven gear from matched it to the cable overdrive that comes with a M1009 and 18t drive gear that came in my civilian 208TC. My other m1009 gave me 22 with the 6.2. With the 91 J code 6.2, slightly larger tires and 700R4 I was told to expect the 25-28 range from a CA transmission builder I spoke with. You have to baby the pedal but I did and the 26.8 is what I got. Real flat terrain also but real world mileage. Driving around town and highway combined is just over 19mph as I do more around town than highway with it. With a full tank the needle goes past full and didn't hit the full mark until 101 miles highway. Drove from Dartmouth to Foxboro and back. Total of 104m.

My door panels (interior?) are originals that came from a donor truck.

Sorry, I realized I forgot to answer your post. Thanks for the offer on the tools. My brother has an air gun that would have gotten it off also but he was at work and I am stubborn! Figured I just "old school" it off. At least I have a nice big garage with concrete floor to do it in.

Thanks again,
Ted

Went by the paint shop this afternoon and we mounted the brush guard. It was painted with a high quality bed liner type material. Really came out nice with a light to medium pebbled finish. The chrome bumper bolts are a good contrast to the black guard. Now to give it a bath and get some good pictures with it done w/hardtop. Then the top will come off and the soft top will be here on Monday. Once that's all mounted I'll get more pics. I added a little bling with the metal 6.2L emblems above the front fender marker lights.

Note: forgot to mention. The title of the thread says 84'. Well I guess I should have looked at the truck's paper title before I started this project and thread. It's a 83'.

Did CUCV's have a Chevy or GMC grill emblem when delivered to the military?

You can edit your threads title by going to the first post > edit > advanced and change the title to 83 if you really wanted.

Got the emblems off of eBay. They are made of metal w/adhesive tape on back. Appear to be pretty high quality. Time will tell. I liked the look of them. You can get them black or red lettering.

Cleaned up the truck, added my front axle truss, put the tow shackles on, and took it to the water for some pictures with the hard top. Took some at our local boat ramp in Padanaram (South Dartmouth, MA) and some at the Westport/Dartmouth town beach near Gooseberry Island in Westport, MA. The Elizabeth Islands are 9 miles out past this beach and are in the background of these pictures. Beyond these islands is Martha's Vineyard then Nantucket. The day was slightly hazy and they were hard to see. I am curious which pictures you guys like best as I will probably frame one. There are a couple with me and my wife in the picture. When I had my Gen 1 Blazer I took a picture w/myself at this beach so my wife thought it was appropriate for me to have one with this truck. There is also a picture of my ex in my Gen 1 so my wife said it was "Imperative" that one be taken with her in this Blazer.:D

My Soft Topper was delivered late this afternoon by UPS and I got it all installed so the hard top is removed most likely for good now.

there a shark in those waters....with a mouth this big....

how does the soft-top feel? I mean as far as noise and does it feel sturdy enough to withstand a good storm with high winds?

by the way, I like photo #4 for framing

Funny you say that. They're watching a 14' great white off the cape right now. I thought you might like the area I took the pictures in. I wanted to go right out on Gooseberry Island but the road is all tore up and I would have thrown a load of stones up on my paint.

On the soft top: right now it's only been on a few hours. It went on really tight and the instructions say it will loosen which makes sense. Right now it's tight enough to lift the rear of the side rails up slightly. A few days in the sun should loosen it up. The top and it's components are very well made. No garbage on this unit. I've read where some complain about the cost of it but it is made really well and I suspect will last a long time. I did take it for a ride and there was some noise on the passenger side. Well I pulled in the drive to have a look it turns out one snap was off and the snap was "clicking" on the mating snap.

By design, as the top stretches, the middle bow can be tightened to keep the top taught. I don't believe it will flap much going down the road and I don't think it will leak either. On my Gen 3 Blazer the system they designed should prevent most water penetration.

On the pictures: I like photo 4 also. I do like the boat ramp pictures for the added subject matter in the background too.

I assumed those 6.2 badges were for a new truck with a 6.2 Liter gas burner.
