hey guys I have a 1984 k5 blazer with the 6.2l diesel.
I was wondering how do I tell what size it is? Like people keep asking me if it’s the half ton or 3/4 ton.
And how many bolt is it and what transfer case is it?

I know the transmission is a thr400 but I don’t know the size or the bolt pattern or the differential.


It’s a stock rig is there somewhere I could find the info?

You can ID the type of axles you have here:

Basically if you have 8 lugs on your rims then it’s 1 ton. For the rear axle a one ton would be a 14bolt full floating axle. Of course there are the Dana 60 and 70 axles but 14 bolt is most common. 1/2 and 3/4 ton axles will only have 6 lugs, like a 10 bolt, 12 bolt (both 1/2ton) or 14 bolt semi floating axle (3/4 ton). Front axle, the most common one ton is a Dana 60. Or it’ll have either a 10 bolt or Dana 44, both of which are arguably the same strength.

The k5 is 1/2 ton.
The military version they like to call it 3/4 ton just like they call the k30 cucv a 5/4 ton.
You have 10bolt axles front and back.
If you know you have a th400, then it probably is a military k5, still will have a np208 for transfer case.
Your axle ratio is 3.08:1 in your axles.
On the cucv k5 they did have slightly heavier spring, 3 leaves in the front and 4+overload in the back whith extra clamps to make the spring no droop much and a bit stiffer.

Slight correction. All 3/4 ton (designated as 20-series, not by GVWR) are 8 lug for 1973-1987(91) C/K/R/V

Gets more complicated on the '88+ C/K series (IFS) but those aren't what we are talking about here.
