this only happens when your about mid to full throttle. when your done driving the truck it smells like fuel like crazy. you can smell it bad when you pull the air cleaner off. what could this be???? something in the carb??? or possibly a stuck EGR???

the truck died twice on the way home tonght and had to pull over, put in park just to restart it. it's basically not driveable.

also...the secondaries don't appear to be opening...even in park with my dad slowing hitting throttle all the way to max they don't even tick. they're vac. operated. stock quadrajet...shouldn't they be opening when we hit the gas???

Sounds like your running really rich to me. Did the truck run ok before? If it did, I bet the float sank. I would rebuild the carb while you're in there.

If the truck hasn't ever really run right, you probably need to tune it to run leaner.

The secondaries will only open when there is load on the motor. They shouldn't open when the truck is in neutral (or park) even if its at WOT.

yeah....the truck did run ok before. and my dad(truck in question) just bought a kit to have the carb rebuilt. a guy at his work is gonna do it for 75 bucks.

do you think it's something i could do, rebuilding the carb that is??? im pretty mechanically advanced. but i have never rebuilt a carb before. i would love to learn about it though. :)

hopefully it is the float. are there any other signs of a sunken float????

It depends on what kind of float it is. There is a brass style and a foam style. Brass floats are brazed together and can leak and sink. Foam floats can absorb gas and sink. The float should be replaced with a rebuild anyway.

Rebuilding a Q-jet isn't too hard and should cost you $20-25 with a float. Go ahead and do it yourself, make sure everything is REALLY clean (Q-jets are very sensitive to small bits of dirt) and pay close attention to the way everything comes apart (pictures maybe?) so you can put it back together correctly.

I did the same thing with mine (rebuilt it myself and first carb rebuld) and I didn't think it was really all that hard but it would have been nice IMO to have someone who knew WTF they were doing there so I could ask questions while I was doing it

Kinda sounds to me like a fuel pump issue. You might want to pull the fuel line and crank the truck to make sure fuel comes out. Check the filters too. That's the easy stuff.

if hes smelling gas around the carb I don't think I'd condem the pump but it is possible. since your doing the carb good point about the fuel filter may as well replace it now should run you about 5 bucks. I replaced mine after rebuilding mine and I kinda wonder it that might have been my issue more then the carb but oh well too late now

x2 If I can rebuild it, you can. I rebuilt mine and it wasn't too hard. I messed up some of it, took apart and put it back togethor right and all was fine. In other words, patience is all ya need. Don't rush it, take GOOD pics (mine were dark and blurry and amde it harder) of every single step as you take it apart.
