84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
See, problem solved

And no. The only place I need OD with these 37s on the 4.10 is above 70. Only about 5-8% total drive use at that speed. Not much margin on utility

Oh wait a minute. I have 37s and 4.10.. maybe I dont need overdrive.. now you got me thinking..lol jk. I still want the nv4500

He’s also 465 so this would put you around 2k in OD

This is truth. My highway rpms were great with with SM465, 37’s, and 4.10’s. It was around town and pulling hills where it was less than optimal. Switching up to 5.13’s and 3300 rpm’s at 65 made the NV4500 a must have. Now that i have it sorted out, I love everything about it, shifts nicer than the 465 and has that sweet OD. Mine is the early model with the low gears and 1-4 is basically identical gearing to the 465. It was a good mod for me and how i use this truck.

I get why you would swap this out for a 4L80, but I still think a little part of the world dies every time a manual trans gets swapped out for an auto. Bummer about the constant issues with this manual for you.

I think it’s just frustrating when I attempt to do this the cheap way then learn the lesson and man up to do it right and come to find out that the right way isn’t the complete way.. AA could have said the geometry changes and they didn’t. I usually am pretty good at considering variables and I am a very resourceful person.. but being defeated time and time again.. I just do not possess the financial stamina to throw good money at this.. it’s a great trans when it’s right and the clutch is etc.. but most of my vehicles have been manual and I am retired from that until something else comes along..

I’m not bagging on you at all. The whole situation totally sucks man. I get it, no money tree grows in my backyard either. We do what we have to sometimes.

Do you remember what your highway rpm's were with the 465/37s and 4.10s?

I hate this but I get where you're coming from. Factory parts are always the order of the day with me, they did all the work so why not take advantage of it? 4l80E is a great transmission and will certainly take abuse. Sad it didn't work out for you though.

So if the problem is the pivot point being .25" deeper, why not space it back out or get an adjustable pivot ball? That seems a lot easier than redoing everything to get an auto in.

I out an adjustable throw out bearing in. That’s the same as moving the pivot closer..

An adjustable throw out bearing isn't the same as an adjustable pivot ball...

The end results are different.

It might not be worth arguing about, especially because I would need somebody smarter than me to formulate an explanation that actually makes sense, and because the .250 change in pivot location might not be the only difference in the two bell housings...

I feel you though, my old GVR4 soured my feelings towards manual gear boxes...

Lots of the same the you are experiencing now...
