84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
Had one of my lower links on my crawler fall on my head one night. The Jonny joint clubbed me in the noggin like a baby seal. When I came to I pulled myself out under the rear diff rather than out the side like a normal person would. Sat down and was laughing hysterically while I was bawling my eyes out! Finally got back to reality and was like "what was that all about???"

That's funny because I get super super emotional when I have a concussion, I always have this fear I am gonna forget my wife or kid..

Here's the link to the playlist of the mysterious missfire at idle. @AgDieseler @campfire and any other guys 6.2 diesel experts..

Well, I do think you need another gear in that transmission. :wink1: But in the last video I'm not hearing the miss. Granted that the medium isn't great for capturing precise sounds, but aside from hearing the idle drop from high idle to low idle, it sounded about as normal as I expected to hear through a phone mic.

If you get air in the lines while it's running the engine will stall and then surge as the governor plays with the fuel level to try to hold the engine steady.

The cold start at 60 F tells me you have an issue. No way it should start that hard at 60 F. The 250,000 mile 6.2 in my 81 Jimmy started on the second or third revolution at 25 F. That being said, I don't know how many GP's are non-op on your 6.2. Starter speed sounds within spec...

My '83 could be that cranky, but again, never at 60 F.

So, how many GP's are working?

damn dude!

glad you're basically o.k.

When you get up and down a lot like you did you're using your thighs and butt muscles. They just happen to be the two largest groups in the body. When they work hard they need a lot of oxygen, which is delivered by the bloodstream. So I'm guessing you already had a "pump" going, standing that last time and stretching used the last bit of free oxygenated blood, rereouting it from your head.

Happens to me more than I care to mention...I can feel it "coming on" so to speak, so I can stop and walk it off.

Take care of yourself! and Ethel!

Yea I had been up and down quite a bit so that does make sense. I feel better at least knowing I need to slow down and be more calculating with my movements when getting up or down.

At least at the plug they all illuminate with my test light but that doesn't mean they're actually lighting.
I flogged it to Hesperia tonight at 70 the whole way and it didn't skip a beat. Plus I think I got better mileage haha,
The idle does hunt some so I gotta have something good on with the supply or return.. I'll see what is up when it's light.. it doesn't ever die though??

How are you testing your GP's? Although not foolproof the quick and dirty method I use is a test light clipped to the positive on the battery, probe to the spade of the GP. If the test light lights up that is generally a good GP.

Next up, let's assume you have 8 working GP's...it should be starting on the second rev. So, what GP's are you running? 11G's or anything like the stock garbage that swell glow a lot hotter/faster than the self limiting style like the AC60G's, Autolite 1110's etc. Kennedy quick heats are pretty close to the stock junk for heat time. If you're running any of the self limiting type with the stock controller we have most likely found your hard start problem. 60G's and similar need almost double the glow time, so most of us that use them also have a manual button for glow plugs.

My '83 I didn't want to fock with a manual button so I installed Kennedy quick heats. These did play nice with the stock GP controller...however I was not super impressed with longevity.

So, any idea what type/brand of GP in your 6.2?
