Theres a feller here local selling a really nice looking 84 GMC Jimmy K5.

It is both 6.2 diesel, and manual shift.

I was told the truck came with the gas engine and manual shift stock, and that it was converted by the previous owner.

Anything I should look out for? Im part excited, part skeptical, not too familiar with diesel engines, not a big mechanic guy either, ive always wanted a big diesel, and I love driving stick, but I also dont want to drive a piece of junk.

I see the shifter has been moved forward, and underneath, theres a brace holding up the transmission that looks low to me, im unsure. Im sure theres other things.

I have searched around google, havent found anything about hooking up the diesel to the stock manual trans.

I just want to be able to look it over and see in specific spots that this was a quality conversion, differentiate between 'rigged' and 'quality' and I was wondering what knowledgable people would be able to tell me.

Gracias!

4 speed behind the 6.2 was a factory offering in the 3/4 ton and one tons. There really isn't much different that I can think of compared to a gasser with a 4 gear. The 6.2 bolts right up, flywheels and clutches are pretty much identical in construction.

It's a not bad combo in my experience, mostly because the 6.2 doesn't mind revving and the manual tranny robs less power than an auto does.

Look for diesel specific rad; it should have aluminum engine oil cooler lines running in front of the fan. Look for hydro boost brakes, and either the square model 80 box style fuel filter up behind the engine, or a preferrable racor aftermarket filter set-up.

Inside look to see if the cluster is diesel specific. should say "diesel fuel only" on the fiuel guage, and should have two square lights top and center. One should be "glow plugs" and the other should be "water in fuel".

Check the filler neck. Diesel nozzles can be quite large depending on the fill station. I punched the neck out on my Jimmy which left me unable to fill up at a handful of places. My stock '83 pick-up I can fill anywhere as the neck opening is quite large.

The 6.2 isn't a powerhouse, but it gets the truck moving along quite nicely and returns excellent fuel mileage if geared right. They're also quite simple to work on and do last quite a long time if maintained decently. The shifter being forward and underneath the dash partly is completely normal and stock for a SM 465 4 speed. No worries there.

Good luck!
