Hi guys. I've decided to go ahead and start my build thread although my truck doesn't look much different than the day I got it... It sure runs better:woot: in October of 2014 I traded my '02 2wd trailblazer with a salvage title to a local fella for a '84 K5 (I had him throw in a lump 'o cash to boot).

It ran really rough when I got it... Had to use one foot on the brake while giving a little gas with the other or it would cut off while at a stop, loud as hell, and no power. Found a really bad vacuum leak in the intake that couldn't be repaired.

Ended up replacing the old edelbrock c3bx intake with an edelbrock performer eps and replaced the old quadrajet with a holley 600cfm carb. Also a new hei dizzy and plugs and wires. I am really pleased with how it is running now... Of course who doesn't always want a little more power, but pleased for the size motor it has in it.

I am not quite sure what changes the future holds for this truck. I have seen some really nice built rigs on here. But I was surprised at how well maintained this relatively stock truck is and would kinda hate to get too far away from that original look. Maybe a lift one day. But other than that, I want some paint and trim. A little body work. Under the hood, however, I'm open to pretty much anything... Anything within financial reason, that is.

And that's the problem... Unless my situation changes, I'll be rebuilding this truck on a strict budget (hence the name, "Po' Boy"). The progress will probably be slow. Aside from not having huge amounts of extra cash to throw at this project I have 4 kids, ranging in age from 6 to 3 months. But I will try to document all the changes here and would love any feedback and advice you veterans have to offer.

Below are the pics as the truck now sets. You will notice a 3rd row bench seat in the very back. I have not bolted it in yet (no one is riding in it, just keeping it outta the weather and off the front porch so my wife doesn't fuss). I will probably do that one weekend soon. I will post photos and commentary afterward.

cool.... :waytogo:

suggestion for ya... hit the "enter" button a WHOLE bunch of times.. especially in the text.. make paragraphs, people get very annoyed trying to read one HUGE paragraph.. and will often not read it..

also hit it a few times between every pic to space them out a bit....

I'm sure we can answer any question you may come up with, anxious to see the outcome on such a solid looking rig! :D

Thanks ryoken. Edited the original post with your advice in mind and will remember it in the future :waytogo:

looks much better.. sorry to make you're first responses site techy stuff.. ;)

on with the build! :waytogo:

A 327 with center bolt heads? That is an odd combo. Was the old intake modified to fit the center bolt holes?

That wasn't the best photo of the motor and I can see now why you would ask that, Martin, but it is a a regular four bolt valve cover head. Just hard to tell in the photo. Casting number from the head is:

14102193

At least I think I understood your post correctly. If I haven't, please correct me. Also, I'm a fast learner but I don't have much tenure with these old Chevys so if I ever seem like I don't know what I'm talking about, I probably don't, and would welcome any knowledge anyone might want to pass along. For instance, I know that mortec has my head casting number described as:

...87-up... 305/350... 1.94"/1.5" valves

But that's really all I know. If anyone has more knowledge on these heads, I would love to be enlightened:D

Ok... So I've been doing some research and I discovered I'm ignorant. I don't think I understood what you meant when you said "center bolt head."

I did some research on those head numbers and came up with this on another forum:

"chevy72blu 05:30 PM 05-18-2005

I just pulled the valve cover off the driver side
and I got the casting:

14102193

on mortec, it said:

14102193...87-up...305/350......1.94"/1.5" valves

Is this a TBI or a TPI head?

Yup, you have 350 64cc TBI swirl ports. They don't breathe in the upper rpm ranges. Good for low end though. You could grind the swirls out. But for what you do with your truck I would just swap them for actual vortecs or go aftermarket. Probably wouldn't bother with a set of TPI heads because they'll need some work too. Live and learn I guess.

Soooo... Yeah, live and learn. Anyone care to add anything?

You already figured out what I said. Early small blocks (1955-1986) have four perimeter bolts to retain the valve covers. In 1987 GM switched to four center bolts.
