84 Optimized M1009

Highly modified CUCV
Overview:

I purchased this Fine M1009 back in 2009. It is a 1984 Chevy K5 Blazer CUCV M1009.
It was completely stock with only 23,000 original miles. The only thing that was upgraded at the time was leather bucket seats.

I started the build in 2011 and have not stopped building it to this date.

My goal with this build is to keep it street legal, body mostly intact and extremely capable of going just about anywhere, in any terrain, confidently and alone if needed.

When it is running, I drive it daily.

It now has about 55,000 original hard miles. It is on its 3rd motor, 2nd transmission, 2nd transfer case, 2nd set of rock sliders, 2nd set of front spring plates, 3rd set of front springs, 3rd paint job, 4th soft top, 12th set of U-Joints, 3rd set of driveshafts, 2nd set of bushwhacker fender flares and 3rd set of interior seats.

In 2005, one of my horses bucked me off into a thorn bush and fractured my lower spine. (An injury almost equivalent to Christopher Reeve’s) Since that day I have been extremely limited to doing the hard and heavy modifications to this fine M1009 and hire shops to help with those projects that I can not do. For the most part, I do a lot of the work myself. I can not lift over 40 pounds without the risk of bursting a disk and I wear a back brace whenever I drive (Micro vibrations) and at work. I work up to 70 hours a week as the Yellowstone National Park Recycle Manager and an additional 5-10 on my days off helping customers with their 6.2 and 6.5 motors. My time is extremely limited. Hiring shops to help has worked well for me so I can mostly plug and play on my well deserved paid vacations. Sooner or later, there will come a time for me where I will no longer be able to ride trails and will need to sell or convert this fine M1009 into a grocery getter. That time is not now, so let’s ride! Don’t feel sorry for me! Feel sorry for that horse that went to the glue factory! Lol!

This first post will be a living document that will be updated often. I will add costs for all parts and try to remember the labor costs.

As of this moment, I have at least $60,000 invested. From parts to labor. If you calculate how long I have owned this M1009 and compare the cost to a new Rubicon, $60,000 over the time span of 13 years is not a lot…

Initial Purchase Cost $1,500

Here’s a few more older pictures…

A 6.2 Banks Sidewinder Turbo I built and sold to a customer for a lot of cash. I used that money to buy a 6.5 Optimizer long block, mostly self refurbished 6.5 parts and currently have it in my M1009.

Last night I installed the famous Doghead starter Relay mod… Here is the pictures from last nights work… The plug was partly toasted but the Oem relay was still good. Better to be safe then sorry. Removing the passenger DIY4X dash only took 30 minutes.

In for the story, that's quite a relationship you've developed there with the '09.

Nice! (y)

Thank you!

Again in to watch.
Nice man!

X2!

Nothing exciting done today… Just finished reinstalling the DIY4X dash, speakers and radio.

Got the battery terminals cleaned, connectors cleaned, took out the recently toasted 12v starter, refurbished one of my spare 24v starters and installed it.

Back to daily driving it again.

It does get a lot better MPG then the Duramax LBZ I noticed and is a lot more fun to drive.

If anyone wants more pictures of anything specific or has questions about the 6.2/6.5 motors, please feel free to ask! I am here to help!

Love the blazer! You have accomplished quite a bit mod wise and wheeling wise with this thing. I will definitely be referencing this build if I get around to 6.5L swapping my blazer. The 6.2L is gutless but does good and gets 17 mpg.

Sweet Cucv

Thank you!

I thought your name looked familiar. I remember the first build thread

Yeah there was a lot of good info in there but the pics were gone… I do not have the old pictures to revive it.

Thank you! You could always put a turbo on your 6.2 and throw low boost levels at it for reliability, more hp/torque and maybe even get better mpg!

I've actually got a 6.5L out of a '92 or '93 Chevy. Turbocharged with a mechanical injection pump. I bought it like 15 yrs ago and been dragging it around with me everywhere I moved. It probably needs a rebuild. Also I think I have a better injection pump in a box somewhere but I'm nor sure what it was any more. I'll have to dig it out and see. Been too broke to do any thing with it and it just keeps going with the 6.2L so I haven't worried about upgrading.

Wow!

Color me impressed! How's that Bostic motor holding up? I've heard a lot of scary stories, but not from anyone that actually owns one.

Thats a bad ass rig.

The Optimizer is running very well! Got about 3000+ miles on it now. Compression is at 415! Zero blowby cold or hot. Conservatively pushing 6-7 psi in town and about 9-12 psi on the interstate. I’ve peaked it shortly to 14 psi only 2 times to test ability.

Since I disconnected the snorkel and added a bigger air filter, my Egts stay at 700 degrees or less.

The increased coolant pressure from the upgraded water pump causes small seepage around the timing cover/thermostat housing/water pump plate. Nothing too serious to cause me to want to replace it.

The higher pressure Oil Pump caused the rear main seal to leak a little. Might change that out if I do an NV4500 swap.

I’ve had to make multiple timing adjustments on the ip because of timing chain break-in stretching. I have it timed perfectly right now.

Bostic Motors does not have a lot of reviews. Their reviews are better then any company I’ve seen out there as far as Optimizer Remans and other Diesel motors.

So far I am loving it! Not liking the Corvette mechanical 700r4 though… the rpm shifting points don’t seem to be to my liking. Shifts way to early when I need the higher rpm. Edit: To compensate this issue, I keep it in Drive at all times and manually switch it to Overdrive when the rpm gets to 2000.

In town, my blazer gets better mpg then the Duramax. On interstate, the Duramax gets the better mpg.

My Warn M12,000 24v motor went out this last winter. I did a lot of research and watched a lot of rebuild videos and decided not to drop another $2,500 on a new winch but to simply just replace the motor. $350

This new motor is an upgrade for the M12,000. Even though it is a 12volt, the additional HP of this new motor will now turn this M12,000 into a M15,000 and will spool much faster.

The old motor had no seals or gaskets. No wonder why water and moisture went inside. This new motor is completely sealed with gaskets on each side and even rubber O-Rings on the bolt ends. I am hoping this one will last a long time.

It only took an Hour to replace the motor and put new grease on the spindle bearings. Everything bolted right up!

I will bolt it back up to the ORD bumper and wire it up to the 12v side terminal on the battery when the rain stops.

Edit:

I called Warn up and learned the 24v contactor #83085 will need to be replaced with a 12v contactor #81400 to make the transition from 24v to 12v on a M12,000/M15,000.

Cheapest one I could find was at Montanajacks.com. $128 Shipped.
