But I would suggest that he get a larger diameter air cleaner and filter. I saw a 400 small block suck the lid downwards with one of those years ago. When we convinced him to get a bigger one and cut a hole in the hood of his Monza, it ran lots better!

Putting the stock one back on is an option once he gets a new filter for it.

Or he could stack two filters together...there's probably another part number filter that's the same diameter but much taller too,I could look one up by dimensions in the Wix catalog I have..

I use the wix # 46220 which is 5" tall with a 14" diameter which clear the HEI.
Or the KN #E1420
I got one of those go fast chrome ones with the 1"tall filter a piece of thread all to clear the height if the filter.
The stock one was fully enclosed minus the factory air intake the the breather filter
