I got a 85 6.2 when I bought it it did not run all they told me something about the starter after I got it cleaned and got some batteries and put the starter back in there and cranked it it's like the starter gear was not touching the flex plate I pulled the starter back off and noticed they had a helicoil in one of the starter bolt holes it did not look like the nicest job so I pulled the helicoil out and plan on redueing it.

My main question is would that cause the starter gear not connect to the flex plate?

It could just be a bad starter or stuck bendix. If you have the starter out again, try hitting it with jumper cables. How to the teeth on the starter look, as well? If it's on the engine, there is a procedure to measure the clearance between the gears. It's possible you have the wrong starter or wrong flexplate, something not matching up.

6.2 ?

Maybe the crankshaft is broken.....try pushing the flexplate and torque converter around with a big prybar...
