85 k5 m1009 build 64" spring ?'s

Yea I'm curious how it's going to work out like i said earlier in the post i originally planned on having a carrier and just doing a spartan locker. But since that didn't pan out i wanted to try this, if it ends up being a pain in the ass I'll be sure to change it out with something more steering friendly. Thanks for the advice.

I"m no axle expert, but setting up Dana's sucks compared to a 14BFF or a 9"...
Isn't it surprising how thin a 14BFF housing is in front of that huge lip...I think Kert and I measured it to be about .125 thick on the housing going up to the pinion.

Yea when i cut it i was really surprised since that back lip is sooo thick. That's why I made the metal underneath go far forward and wraps around it not sure how much it will help but we'll see

Also I don't claim to be an axle expert by any means just done a few different ones but this one took way longer to do

When I shaved my 14 I wish I had made a spot for another bolt even a small on on the bottom to help seal the cover.

Not sure if you can do that on yours but just a thought.

This is where I was planning on doing it when I remember to bring my tap and die set home from work what do you think

I would but there's not much diff cover there and would really expose the bolt. I think I'll do the side ones for now and if it does start leaking I'll actually cut out a little section of the cover to bring the bolt up into the cover some and weld a small piece of 3/8" to the bottom of the axle housing but inside that i can tap and bolt it too. I don't know if you can see in this pic (it's all I have on my phone I'm at work) but even using the Allen head bolts I have on it there wouldn't be much room I'd have to grind some material away. I'll have to look at it closer when I'm off and see . Thanks for the input it's bugged me about not having a center bolt since I made it. :doah:

When I was thinking about a bolt in the center I was thinking like a 3/8 or 1/4 something small just to apply some pressure.

I ended up getting mine to seal third time so I left it alone for now.

Sorry for the lack of updates I've been out of town alot lately and am about to leave for another 2 weeks. Only real update is I got my 60 all together and wire wheeled down just need to paint and throw under the blazer and also I bought an 86 crew cab yesterday :woot: not sure if I'll start a thread on it because it only needs a couple minor things and paint

Sorry for the lack of updates shortly after buying my crew cab I found out I'm moving to Michigan so funds stopped for the blazer and I've been saving and putting some into the crew cab so it will make the 17 hour drive. It had a flat bed and work boxes which I sold and got a dually bed but I'm not a huge fan of them nor do I pull heavy enough stuff to justify wearing 6 tires at a time.

Anyways I swapped beds with a guy tonight and it's got a regular bed now. Also last week I bought 7 37 " military tires 2 brand new and the others were over 85 % life left and 6 h1 wheels with run flats for 400 bucks plus the sh***y dually wheels :D . Also did crossover here's some pics of it. Don't mind the junkyard camo, my roommate calls it the rainbow warrior now :sign9:

IThe other day I was at pick and pull and i snagged some 2 leaf plus overload 64" springs. Only have 20 bucks in them and the truck only had 98k miles. I know everybody tries to get the 3 leaf ones but my question is, is it really worth it to swap to the 64s over the 52s and if so will these be OK? I figured they would be fine since they were in a 1/2 ton pickup and the only thing I plan on having in the back is a cage. These will be going in my blazer btw. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I love my 63s I think they definitely have an advantage over the 52s. I have run the 3 leaf and the 5 leaf. I like the 5 leaf better less axle wrap. It was not much of a height difference and very little flex difference between the 3 and the 5 leaf. They were supposed to under a half ton truck so I think you would be fine running them

If i went with the 64s would doing a add a leaf be worth it? I planned on something for axle wrap anyways since that seems to follow with those springs.
