Hi everyone, I've got a '90 Jimmy...stock (for now!) I'm going to be lifting it within the next few weeks...just trying to come to a decision on how high!

I've got a chance to buy an '86 3/4 ton that runs for $500...I'm thinking about buying it...I could use the front/rear end..my brother could use the 350 for his jeep. What front/rear ends would this have? Guy says it's a posi rear..what gears did the 86's have?

Thanks!

if he says it is a posi, it is most likely a gov-loc. not great but better then the 10 bolt you have now. you can replace the gov-loc carrier with either a stock open carrier, an ARB, a spool, or a detroit inside an open carrier if you blow up the gov-loc or just want something different.

the front axle is the same as yours except its 8 lug and the ratio matches the 14 bolt rear and probably not the same as your current rear. most 3/4 tons are 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56. while 1/2 tons are as low as 2.72.

Most commonly it would be a 14 bolt FF with 3:73 or 4.10's in the rear, the front would be an 8 lug 10 bolt.

4.56's only came in the CUCV's as far as I know. Some 3/4 tons in the mid 80's were weird, with half ton components underneath, etc. It honestly probably isn't a posi, most weren't, but everyone loves to claim they have one.

I got my rear 4.56 geared 14 bolt out of a 1975 3/4 ton civilian truck with a 6 cylinder and a stick and my 60 out of a 1979 1 ton DRW stake body that a friend of mines dad bought new.

That's good to know that they are out there then.

those are the 2 types of trucks to look for, 6 cylinders and C&C's. better chance of finding 4.56 gears.

Hey Thanks guys! Think I'll just hold out and save up for something stronger. I already blew apart my 10 bolt rear. I won't be doing a ton of wheeling, probably more mud than anything, but I won't to have it built up so I can if I want to!
