So I'm having a hard time in determining the exact part I need for my truck. My carb needs a mixture control solenoid. I found this...

and this....

Both seem like they could work, but hey I could be just as wrong. Anyone know exactly what one does work? If not, what one will work. It's driving me slightly insane.

The carb is a Quadrajet made by Rochester and has a sticker that reads 5508 on it.

17077779 is imprinted in a small circle.

Also I find this number on it as well...
17085508
1965 Hmm

The truck is an 86 K5, 4x4, 350, V8, w a/c, auto tranny, and vin L. Thanks.

Can't get those at work, but I can *perhaps* pull the part number for your carb from my GM parts manual later tonight.

There were a few different things GM used where the MCS connector is, so yes, make sure of what you are getting before spending money, I wouldn't be surprised if some people are selling incorrectly named parts. :)

If i were you i would start by taking yours out and finding a part number on it so you can correctly reference the part. Less likely to be buying incorrect parts that way.

It was taken apart many times because it was rebuilt. That was the part determined to be the one making it run like crap. It's currently not even at my house. Iceman has it at his place which is wayyyy across town. :D

So yeah I don't have access to the carb. I can't find anything on the part itself due to that and so far none of the parts places can help me out. I can post my full vin if that helps.

I'm seriously going a bit crazy because nothing seems to want to tell me what one works for this carb. I can get parts numbers that don't match this carb. Then I can get carb numbers that don't match parts. Ahhhh!

I'd be surprised if any of them were very different from '81-86(90 for some cars) but when I get home tonight I'll see what is called for on an '86.

An 86 is a completely different carb than an 81. It's the last year before TBI and they tried to be cute with the design. I think the 85 might be the same or very close. This carb has been nothing but the devil in rebuilding it. But hey I can say I at least understand it a bit more despite the fact I'm still lost in many aspects.

They used the exact same setup on every single US GM 4 barrel carbed cars from 1981-1990, and trucks starting in about 1984 for CA only. So there is a TON of these out there. If you went and asked for an MCS from a 1982 307 Olds Cutlass, you'd probably get the right piece.

If you really want to get nitpicky, (not you, in general) there are differences in the needles/jets among the CCC carbs, (and other parts as well, however minor) but the MCS is pretty simple...it pulses the primary rods to try and keep mixture constant at steady throttle positions. It's not a complicated design, but the parts finding is complicated because of the CA only nature of these carbs on trucks, as well as the fact that GM used three different pieces in the same location as the MCS, depending on what they were trying to do, and the MCS is the only one that works with CCC.

If you want to read up on them, this is a pretty good page:

As a matter of fact, an MCS part number is 17111102 and is still valid through GM. We'll see if it matches the truck one.

Part number 17111074 "solenoid kit, mixture control", group 3.440 is what is listed for your carb number. I don't see this listed at gmpartsdirect.com, not listed over at acdelco.com either. Part number may have changed since '88, dealer might be able to look up and see if the number has changed. There are at least two MCS' listed for that year, differences were based on altitude, and ac or no ac.

17085508 is the important carb number.

I would really think someplace like Napa could help you out if the dealer can't give you a good answer. I suspect it's been replaced by another part number, because other MCS same vintage are still listed.

I'll go to the Baxter's I usually go to. The only reason I haven't is it isn't nearby anything I do ever. The guy there always goes out of the way to help me though when I drop in. He finds it funny that's my last name. Whatever helps! :D
