86 dash pad

So I bought a perfect dash pad from evilbay out of a 91 burb dyed it correct blue got it in without damaging it, then took it to a shop and had some work done including replacing the windshield and now two big cracks in it :eek1:.
Has anyone used the gm replacement pad they had out for a while (I think its discontinued now) but its I'm thinking an injection molded thing? or is it best to just get another delicate old one? :dunno: What to do What to do...
 
I"ve been wondering the same thing. Classic parts has them as well, But I always wonder about fit and finish. Anyone have first hand experience with these or just the dash covers for that matter. Sorry Bailey wasnt trying to hijack your thread.

No Bud that's not a hijack just a continuation of the topic as I see it :waytogo: I don't think I like the cap route looks too plastic to me so that's why I avoided it and I found a "stored for 30 years never been out of the box" one but at 370.00 and climbing I think I will pass. so that seems to leave (A) getting another good shape but fragile old one or (B) the new restoration copy, both around 220.00 or so. :dunno:

Damn, tics me off they were so careless to lean all over mine and crack it up, was old but looked damn good. I looked at the guy and all I could think was "yea crack kills"
 
Shouldn't the shop that cracked it up be covering the cost of replacement anyway?
 
all I get from them is look at how dryrotted it is, and what do you expect? etc etc. I said so is the Mona Lisa but as long as you keep your thumb outta her eye shes ok. :rolleyes:
 
I got the Classic Parts dash, the $220.00 one. I've been cutting and grinding it for about 2 weeks now to get it to fit right. If I was to do it over I would probably get the GM one from them, but isn't it like 500 something dollars? I think thats what Teck did, shipped back the cheaper one and got the more expensive dash pad. He said the fitment was a lot better.
 
Thats the info I was looking for Jay, sorry you had problems with yours but thanks for the heads up on how it fit. I think I will be looking for an OEM one.
 
I bought on OER one from Classic Industries.
It's one of the few things I actually like it better than OEM, it's not built like an OEM dash (at least not like an OEM one from our trucks era). OEM dash has thin metal underlayment layer, foam layer and vinyl covering. It's that thin vinyl covering that cracks in the sun. These OER ones have some metal underlayment but the dash material is cast as a single piece, no layers (like a modern car). The metals embedded into the bottom. No foam to dryrot, no vinyl to crack. *Seems* like it will hold up much better over time. Looks wise, I think it looks perfect, looks like OEM.

Now I can't speak for fitment because I have an all fiberglass body tub, I had cut/drilled the spot welds from the metal dash out of the old body to use in the new body (the entire metal piece that holds the glove box, radio,ash tray, IP panel...etc). So I had to trim the dash pad anyway to fit as these glass bodies aren't perfect. The only places I trimmed though where the very front of the dash pad where it meets the windshield header, glass body is alot thicker than metal I was expecting to trim there anyway. Everything else seemed like a good fit.

Yah mine has one. You guys are talking about the hard plastic one right? My only complaint is the hillbilly PO was too stupid to glue it down or something and shot a few drywall screws smack dab in the top and now its all bent goofy and the thin spots up front around the vents are all bowed. Most people dont notice its not factory so i guess it works lol
 
Or maybe im wrong, mine is the kind that sits on top of the original to cover up the cracks. Pretty sure it only costs like $90

73 makes a good point about how its made and how it would possibly be better in the sun. That's kind of why I kept the one I got. The drivers side seems to be a bit flimsy but I'm gonna give it a chance and see how it does.
 
I'm still on the fence about this. I like the idea of the dash cover because of the costand I dont plan on doing a concours resto. But..... every time I look at that nasty old dash I took out I ask myself do I really want to put that back in there? $500 for a new dash tho!!!!:eek1::doah:
 
Well I went the safe route and got an OEM unit I found on evilbay. It was five years in a c10 then after a wreck got covered and put on a shelve in a body shop so it is pretty well preserved. should be good for quite a few years, oh and an added bonus is it is already my color! :woot:
 
Well It seems to fit pretty well but I cant really tell what all is caused by the screws and whats not :dunno:

Id say it looks a MILLION times better than what its hiding underneath, and no way in H3ll im spending coin for a replacement. Id say its worth it compared to the other options. its just thin plastic. Id say silicone or some adhesive down to your existing one and call it a day :waytogo:

You can check it out if you come to jessies when we do the cage :D
 
Yea I think I will look at then. I plan on coming. Might actually be the jimmy's maiden voyage. Clintons about 20-25 minutes from me. Just make sure you guys have your cellphones on.:haha:
