BigOrange90Jimmy submitted a new Build:

86 K10 Stepside

Ok, after seven years of not owning some old GM metal, I'm back! Here's what I'm starting with:

1986 Chevy Silverado K10 Stepside
350/700R4/208
10 bolts (3.08 with the lovely G80...YAY!)
stock for the most part (should have a 305)
aftermarket A/C
throwback roll bar in the bed that I think will be staying

The plan:

This will be replacing my current '07 Tacoma for daily driver use, so I will be keeping it mild(er) and mainly doing a restoration and drivetrain upgrades.

4" lift
35's
1 tons
TBI or 5.3 swap
SM465 or NV4500 trans
NP205
custom bumpers

I know, run of the mill stuff these days. I guess because it's a different body style that it makes it a bit unique.

So here's the clean slate!

Awesome truck:D

May I ask a couple of things. First off why tons. 35s or even 37s can be handled easily by a built up 10 bolt or 44 still go 14b in fact he rear whether it be full float or semifloat.

Look into cusom springs for a daily driver ride is important

Awesome truck man

sweet little truck, good luck on the build. My only advice is to do it in small stages so you can keep it on the road and enjoying it as you progress. The current drivetrain sounds up for the daily driver duty even with 35's once you re-gear and get rid of the gov-bomb.

Why tons? I can pick up a set for $800 that are matched. Seems like a no-brainer to pick them up with the gear ratio I need instead of buying the 14b rear and regearing/converting the front or buying a 3/4 ton set. Just thinking. I may still go the 3/4 ton route.

I will look into Deavers or Alcans for the front. The truck came with an ORD flip kit in a box.

I'm building off of previous experience for the reasons I'm swapping out the drivetrain. I want a tough-as-nails daily driver (with some light wheeling) with this body configuration, and I don't have the tools/skills to shorten a 3/4 or 1 ton chassis.

Thanks for the compliments on the truck, and the advice, guys! I'm well on my way to getting what I'm really wanting.

Thats a clean looking step side :thumb:

Instead of deavers or alcans you could get ord customs. They are made by alcan but designed by ord specifically for your truck.

I'd be looking for an nv4500 for daily use. Chevy305 got a short throw shifter for one that really tightens up the shifter feel.

Subbed for a fellow stepside but Please get rid of that roll bar!

Oh and for daily driving, look into a 5.3 or 6.0 with a 4500 behind it. Now that's solid right there.

Aw no roll bar? Come on, man! It's a classic! Haha!

Thanks for the heads up on springs. I'll have to read more on the 5.3 to see if that's something I want to get into.

For $800, you'd be silly not to go with the Dana 60.

.....oh, and I vote against the roll bar as well.

Update!

After tinkering with the truck for a few days, I've been able to uncover some of the history on it.

For starters, this truck wasn't as "rust free" as it was claimed. Someone has replaced both rockers and a partial section of the driver's side floor pan. No big deal, as it looks like it was done fairly professionally.

I've had to remove the transmission to determine what was causing the transmission to whine when in gear. It's at the shop now getting diagnosed. If it needs something minor, I'll have it repaired. If it needs a rebuild, I'll go ahead with the manual swap. I'm currently scouting parts for that, but have a line on a 465/208 combo.

The front fenders, inner fenders and hood need to be replaced due to damage and rust. Driver's side has damage behind the marker light where the bumper was pushed into it. Passenger side has an area on the front wheel well that is bent outwards and creased.

I managed to pick up a parts truck to help with the fuel injection swap for the cost of FREE! It's a '90 Blazer hack job. I'm not a fan of the VSS and electronic speedometer, but I can adapt it easily. It's been sitting in a neighbor's driveway for four years, so I'm not sure what works and what doesn't. For now, I'll strip what I need and part the rest.

There's a leak from the cowl area to the interior. It's probably something to do with this aftermarket A/C setup. I'll have to investigate it more before it ruins the new carpet.

Oh yeah, and I removed the roll bar. Haha!

I'd be interested in the power mirrors and switch off of the '90 if you sell them.

The rear fender is gone on one side but intact on the other? :screwy:

Ok, the transmission shop called and said that the pump is shot, it needs a torque convertor, clutches in 3-4 are smoked, and the band is cooked also. So, I told them they have a free case to use with someone else. I called today and scored a hydro 465/241 combo from a '90 K5 for a little more than what the shop told me it would cost to repair the TH700. So I guess that will be coming up on this build thread soon.
