So I just became the proud owner of a bone stock 86 K30 :D. 454/400/205 , the truck is completely untouched under the hood. I've never owned a unmolested K truck before so I am amazed at the amount of emissions stuff under the hood.
I would like to get rid of whatever I can, mainly for easier access to things and to eliminate the spider web of hoses etc. I'm guessing it's a 1 ton thing, as this truck has what appears to be 2 smog (air) pumps and some kind of flapper in the D side exhaust manifold, and no cats on factory dual exhaust.
I live in MD, and any vehicle over 20years old can be tagged "historic", which means no emissions or inspection is required (can't DD on historic tags ). So my question is, what can I ditch to clean up the area and simplify the engine bay, and maybe add some performance, but not hurt it. The engine is going to left stock for the most part, I would like to do a OBA setup at some point, and want to leave the AC intact.

Is this a CC carb? If you are going to ditch a bunch of stuff, you will want a new dizzy and carb. Also, I believe, even in your state, it is illegal to remove this stuff. Here in CA, to run offroad only, you need a Green or Red sticker. You can't even get that if your smog stuff is missing. That's more of a federal thing too.

I also recommend keeping all the hoses and smog stuff, thrown neatly in a box or something. Might be valuable since it's coming off a big block.

I was wondering about the CC carb, but I'm thinking it is not :dunno: , there doesn't appear to be any wires (other then the electric choke) going to the carb and the dizzy seems to have the harness I'm used to on older HEI's. Is there something I'm missing as far as a "tell" of having a CC carb and dizzy?

As far as removing stuff, tagging something historic here requires nothing more then going to the DMV with a title and leaving with tags, no safety inspection, no emissions nothing. You are limited to the amount of street driving allowed, they define it as not to be used for everyday transportation of people or products on public highways, which is just fine. It is not something that is really even enforced, at least in this part of the state.

What ever I do remove , will be saved, the only reason Im even considering "fixing something that isn't broke" :D is the fact that something as simple as pulling a valve cover is greatly complicated by the amount of hoses etc in the way. The 2nd smog pump mounted top center is especially annoying, just trying to look at the water pump to see if it was leaking was a pain with the pump there.

I have the same truck and it had the same smog. Carb and distributor you DON'T need to change. You can loose the air pumps and all the extra vacuum lines. The plugs for the manifold air tubes can be sourced from NP208 drain plugs.

So what is the point of the valve in the driver side exhaust manifold :dunno:

Oh , and I wish we had the "same truck" :D yours is sweet :waytogo: , but then if mine was as nice as yours I'd have to buy yet another one so I could go wheeling :doah: :D

You can loose the valve in the DS manifold....either cut it out and weld the holes or just tack weld it open.

Or if you want put a set of headers on it and send me those manifolds. They are notorious for cracking and I would like to have a spare set.

Thanks...I am going to build a K5 to play with...I hope.

Headers would be nice, but, right now it's a budget build so the manifolds are staying for now. If I ever ditch them I'll keep you in mind :waytogo:

Im doing the exact opposite, my Cummins K5 is going to be too nice to wheel, so Im building a K30 to play with.
