I was wondering where the back-up light switch is located. It seems as though the lights are not working consitantly at this time. I have notice that depending on the possition of the steering wheel I can get the lights to come on and go off.....

thanks

If it's an auto, then it's in the neutral safety switch...which is on the column. If it's a stick, then there is a switch on the trans itself.

Look at the bottom of the steering column near the firewall, It snaps into the column via 2 tabs (its white in color). I had problems with mine, removed it and found lots of corrosion on the metal tabs. I cleaned it up and has worked great since then. Hope this helps

The unit is an automatic. I will have to take a look at the connections and see what I can find. The switch itself.....does it have adjustments?

There are no adjustments on the switch. If the backup lights are coming on in the wrong place, like when you are most of the way to neutral or close to park, the actual linkage will need to be adjust down by the trans. That is pretty common on these older vehicles, they just get out of adjustment over time. You should still check the connections as well, switches can go bad.

Next time I get the truck in the garage I will have to make the adjustments. The switch was replaced about 1 year ago. I will make sure there are good connections.

once again Thanks CK5 Forum

So I took a decent look at the connection tonight while trying to put up with the weather. I have determined that the connection is good and the issue is not related to just being between neutral and reverse. The issue is related to the position the steering wheel is in. If I hack-saw the wheel back and forth the light will go on and off. So the question is there a set of contacts in the column or where is the actual switch at? I found the switch for the High beams, and the connection harnes for the column wiring but I did not locate the back-up light switch.

Any Ideas?

thanks

That would point to a bad switch, or it could just be that the turning of the wheel is causing enough of a difference in the position of the shift linkage that it turns them on/off. The switch itself is located near the bottom of the column, and uses two wires. It is part of the neutral safety switch, and it is mounted at the bottom of the column. It has been a while, but I still think the linkage is out of adjustment.

So I did investigate the switch some more today and I would like to note that there is adjustment to the switch. I adjusted it and all is good again.
